Show Escalante News By Marlene Haws 826-4859 Atrrracting many friends and relatives to town was Melanie Cottam's LDS mission farewell, in Escalante First Ward Sacrament Meeting last week. Ross and Nadine Shelley were in Las Vegas, Nev. with the family of their son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Laura Shelley. While there they attended the baptism of their grandson, Tyler. They just got back home when they received word that their daughter, Holly Hatch, Mesa, Ariz., had pneumonia so Ross took Nadine back to Las Vegas and she flew down to take care of the little grandkids until Holly is well again. Dan and Lois Spencer and Geraldine Liston joined with other board members of the telephone company and spent most of last week in San Diego, Calif, attending meetings. Our condolences to Mavis Munson and family. Her mother, Helen Jones, passed away Feb. 9, in Cedar City. She would have been 88 on Feb. 25. Starns Mecham was in Panguitch for x-rays. Brittney Butler was there having her tonsils out. Ramona Alvey was recovering from a fall and Irene King is, hopefully, on the mend since she fell and broke her hip. Fay Alvey received word that her grandson Curtis Coombs, Boulder, is in the Utah Valley Medical Center in Provo. The same one his father, Anthony, is in. Curtis was hurt when his horse fell with -him. He had broken bones in his face and nose and possibly some broken ribs. Jeannie Davis has been employed as a cook at the senior citizen center. Betty P. Alvey will be going to work at the Prospector Inn. Don and Lillian Coleman seem to be adjusting to retirement quite well. Don retired from the BLM with 26 years of service. Lillian worked with the school lunch program for 25 years. They are probably waiting for the first signs of summer so they can pack up the camper and head for the hills. More power to them! Committees have been chosen for the 17th of March party (To be held on the 15th). Food committee chairmen will be Al and Lani Barlow from the first ward, Don and Lillian Coleman from the second ward and Marlene Haws will be in charge of the program. Mark it on your calendar and be sure to attend. After a five week stay in St. George, Lewis and Jean Griffin came from Provo to check their place out and Marlow and Christa Schow were here from West Jordan for a couple of days. They are going to build on to their house here and move down permanently. (Christa won out!!!) The Spencer brothers, Dudley and Ushur, went on a shopping spree last week. They said they were going to a tool sale in St. George, but Dudley came back with a fancy new Oldsmobile van. Maybe they had it full of tools! That is the first time the two of them have been able to go on a trip together for many a year, so they enjoyed just being together. Chance Brooks, the son of Maria Goerdel and Kay Brooks, was taken by life flight from the Garfield Memorial Hospital in Panguitch to the Primary Childrens Hospital in Salt Lake. Chance was diagnosed with viral encephalitis. Mel and Vaunie Richins went up for moral support and were finally able to bring them home on Tuesday. On Thursday Maria's husband, Dave, was taken back to the hospital, again, with another heart attack, suffered shortly after he arrived for work at the sawmill. Betty R. Alvey had daughter Irene and granddaughter, Kylene Tait, So. Jordan, here for a few days while Kylene was on a school break. They also visited Kylene's Grandma Tait in Orderville. Betty also enjoyed an overnight visit from Layne and Marian Foote, St. George. Layne finished a carpeting job for Betty while they were here. Upon returning home, Layne went into the hospital for some major surgery. He came through it okay and reports are, he is improving each day. See Escalante News On Page 3-A Escalante News (From Page 2-A) The children of Vernon and Hazel Griffin all gathered at the Griffin home to celebrate Vernon's 80th birthday. It was supposed to be a surprise party, but somehow the surprise leaked out! Coming from Richfield were: Raymond and Marsha Griffin, their daughters; Gena Logan and Nikki Hart; Tom and Mable Seegmiller and daughter Heather; Calvin and Carolyn Eyre and Lynnette Eyre, Provo; John and Shona Daniels, daughter Teena and husband, Ephraim; Sharon and Robin Griffin, Monroe; Marilyn Brant, West Jordan and Alan Griffin of Escalante. Vernon's sister, Ethel Griffin was also able to attend the party. Happy birthday, Vernon! Max King, Kanab, visited Rolain Alvey on the weekend. No, Max is not a gentleman friend. She is the cousin of the Kings who used to live here and in Boulder! Rolain also enjoyed a motherdaughter outing with her daughters, Faye Lyman and Gwen Porter, when they all went to Salt Lake and Provo to spend Rolain's Christmas gift certificates at R.C. Willey's Furniture Store. Arnold and Deon Alvey went to St. George, where Deon had some treatments on her back. They visited with Quay and Carol Simons, of Las Vegas, Nev. at Chuck-A-Rama. They send greetings to all their Escalante friends and are hoping to visit here for the 24th of July celebration. Their son, Mason, is still on his LDS mission in Nicaragua, Managua and (get this girls) their other son, Martell, is still a bachelor! Imi and Suzi Kun are the new managers of. the restaurant at the Prospector Inn. They have two sons, Atilla, 14, and Thomas, 10. The Kun's have lived in St. George for the past six months, but their homeland is Budapest, Hungary. Stanley and Marlene Stowe and Leah Griffin met Val and Ann Haws, St. George, in Kanab and they all went to Mesa, Ariz, to spend the weekend with Jeff and Marilee Miller. Judy Kelly Workman called Geraldine Liston to tell her that her husband, Bill, died suddenly and quite unexpectedly of cancer. Judy lives in Lovell, Wyo.. Our condolences to her and her family. Out of a dozen entries throughout the state, Bronson Cottam, son of Dan and Glenna Cottam is the 5th grade winner of an essay contest sponsored by the Utah chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. He wrote his essay on the "Cream Cellar Road. He interviewed towns people who actually used the road to haul their cream from Boulder to Escalante in the "olden days". His school teacher, Sue Bassett, also walked part of the road with Bronson and his classmates. Harriet Priska, who is a member of D.A.R., will pick his award up for him at their meeting in Salt Lake City next month as the Cottam family will not be able to attend at that time. Congratulations, Bronson! |
