Show Escalante C of C; The Changing Economies in the Western States ESCALANTE Tonight's meeting of the Escalante Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce will address the area's economic and environmental environmen-tal strengths and the challenge of achieving prosperity without sacrificing sac-rificing the quality of life and community spirit so important to area residents and the business community. A no-host dinner meeting is set for 6 p.m. at the Ponderosa Restaurant in Escalante, with a pre-dinner social to meet - the evening's speakers. The speakers will begin at 6:30 p.m. There is a 15 percent discount for chamber meeting attendees and dinner is not mandatory. Featured speaker will be Dr. Tom Powers, chairman of the Department of Economics at the University of Montana and the author of "Lost Landscapes and Failed Economies: The Search for a Value of Place. " Power is a leading authority on the changing economies of Western states, and has studied the relationship b etween the environment, quality of life, and economic development in the American West for many years. His work shows that environmental environmen-tal protection and the conservation conserva-tion of land, resources, and recreational recre-ational opportunities are key to building stable, healthy economies. econo-mies.
