Show Old Hatch Bell Is Dedicated In Rites HATCH Hatch residents met July 24 to dedicate a cherished old bell once used to communicate with townspeople throughout the town. Ninety-three-year-old Effel Riggs opened the ceremonies, stating stat-ing that her assignment to seek a Daughters of Utah Pioneers marker for the old bell might be her "last opportunity to give service to her community and church." She reminisced remi-nisced about the old bell which was installed in a steeple on the old chapel in 1910. Fay Mickelson presented a history his-tory of the bell, noting that it was purchased through the old Brigham Young Academy in Beaver and hauled by team and wagon to Hatch. Her final question left everyone ev-eryone wondering, "How did they get it up in the steeple?" The unveiling of the marker was accomplished by county president Irene McEwen and first vice captain May Sawyer. LDS Bishop Craig Barney offered of-fered a prayer, and President Layton Barney dedicated the marker and bell. Oneta Campbell recited an original orig-inal poem she had created to honor the bell and May Sawyer and Ardis Evans sang a song. The brief and poignant ceremony "joined the present with the past," said McEwen. |
