Show -Lightning Kills Park Worker BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK A Bryce Canyon employee em-ployee died July 29 in a Salt Lake City hospital after being struck by lightning during a thunderstorm at the park on July 26. Carrie Lynn Beaty, 18, American Ameri-can Fork, was employed as a clerk at the gift shop at Bryce Canyon Lodge. Shortly after 3 p.m. on July 26, she was helping her visiting I parents set up their tent at Sunset f Campground when a severe thunderstorm struck the area near park headquarters. Lightning struck a tree in the campground, then jumped to Beaty who was holding a tent pole. I According to a park spokesman, campground host responded immediately, imme-diately, reported the incident and began CPR. Park rangers responded within two minutes and continued CPR. A Garfield County advanced life support unit arrived and added its assistance. Beaty began to breathe shallowly, and a thready heartbeat returned. She was transported trans-ported to Garfield Memorial Hospital in Panguitch, then airlifted airlift-ed to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. She died three days later at the hospital. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Richard Beaty of American Fork. |
