Show Escalante Honors Retiring Custodian ESCALANTE With 22 years to his credit, Vergean Porter is retiring as custodian of the Escalante schools. The Escalante PTA combined its regular monthly meeting with a retirement re-tirement party Thursday evening where Porter was honored by students stu-dents and colleagues. School children chil-dren from various classes sang songs and read tributes to Porter recognizing him for his many dedicated dedi-cated years of service. Jamie Lyman received a kiss when she presented him with a picture pic-ture of the kindergarten children. First graders snag about his endearing endear-ing mustache and the youngsters in second grade recalled the jokes and fun they had shared with Porter who had rescued them from a broken heater and sinks clogged with crayons and paper towels. Porter is known for grading snow from the sidewalks with his tractor, and for mowing lawns and fixing motors even during the kids' favorite movies. Porter said that most difficult of all was keeping both schools operating, oper-ating, sometimes with obsolete materials and little help. Supt. Jerold Judd presented Porter with a gift from the school board and concluded his remarks of appreciation noting it will take two men to replace Porter. Escalante's new high school will be open for the fall semester. Natalie Coombs read a poem composed for the occasion of I 'Mf ' " : " 1 l ...... i f " " ? " - "" ; :-:-x - : v.
