Show Tropic Quilts Go To Iowa Flood Victims TROPIC Flood victims of the mid-West are recent recipients of an on-going quilt project that has caught hold all over the southern Utah area. More than 1,100 quilts have been shipped to the flood area, with 10 of those created in Tropic by a group of approximately 35 Tropic area ladies who responded with their talented needles to the call for help. Sara Atkins of St. George had started the project in August, placing an advertisement in her local newspaper, with results that astonished her. The enthusiasm soon spread from Washington County into Iron, Kane and Garfield Counties and even into Piute, where one lady purchased her own material and personally made 27 quilts to contribute. In Tropic, Faye Pollock saw Atkins' ad and called her Relief Society president Sandrea Francisco. The two ladies soon enlisted the help of many willing volunteers to create the local quilts. As the scope of the quill project grew throughout southern Utah, a garment manufacturer in St. George began furnishing fabric for the quilts, a sporting goods company supplied plastic wraps and storage, and a long-haul trucking company provided shipping to Dcs Moines, Iowa on a space-available basis. In Iowa, the Salvation Army provided storage and distribution to flood victims. |
