Show Evan Excell Honored As UHSAA Outstanding AD PANGUITCH Panguitch native na-tive Evan Excell was honored recently re-cently as Utah's High School Athletic Ath-letic Director of the Year one of 15 people recognized by the Utah High School Activities Association for outstanding contributions in their fields of endeavor. Excell serves as athletic director at Ben Lomond High School in Ogden. The Distinguished Service Award was initiated in 1987 to honor those whose contributions and service to high school activities have gone beyond the "second mile." Excell begins his term this month as a member of the board of directors director of of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Administra-tors Association as the organization holds its annual convention in Las Vegas. As director of section seven of the NIAAA which includes Utah, Arizona, California, Nevada and Hawaii, he is the first Utahn ever to hold the office. His term will run until December 1996. Excell's assignments as athletic director at Ben Lomond currently include teaching mathematics, and serving as head basketball coach, and as golf coach. He has been teaching and coaching coach-ing for the past 27 years including stints at Bryce Valley High School, Escalante High School, East Carbon Car-bon High School and Carbon High f 1 L J Evan Excell School. In 1986, his Ben Lomond basketball bas-ketball team captured top honors in the state in 1987, were runnersup in 1987 and took third place in 1991. The girls track team there were state champions in 1987 and took second place in 1986. Since Excell became athletic director di-rector at Ben Lomond, the Scots have responded with nine state athletic ath-letic championships and 12 second place wins. They have also garnered gar-nered 35 region titles. Excell, 50, lives in Pleasant View with his wile, the former Nicki Griffin of Escalante. The Excclls are parents of five. He is a son of Hilma and the late James Excell of Panguitch. |
