Show Garfield Seniors Enjoy 1,000 Meals A Month Nearly a thousand senior citizen meals a month are served in Garfield County, meeting not only the nutritional needs but some important im-portant social needs of the county's many senior citizens. The January count showed 557 of those meals were served at the county's three centers in Escalante, Henrieville and Panguitch and 399 served as "Meals On Wheels" to homebound seniors. After five years at the old suggested sug-gested donation price of $1.75 a meal, rising prices have finally caught up with the seniors' three kitchens. Garfield County director Deon Alvey announced last week that the new suggested price for meals is $2, with those under 60 asked to donate $4.50. "It's critical," said Alvey, "that more people participate in the senior se-nior meals program; we could lose the centers if seniors don't use them regularly. "Sometimes it's hard to make yourself get out of the house on wintry days," she said, "but the effort ef-fort pays off in tasty, well-balanced meals and a cheerful atmosphere where you can keep in touch with friends." Cooks are Loraine Barney in Panguitch, Teora Willis in Henrieville, Hen-rieville, and Twila Mclnelly subbing sub-bing for Millie Mclnelly in Escalante. Reservations are helpful, and should be made by 9:30 a.m. where possible. Rides to and from the centers are available in the center vans, and those who are home bound need only to contact a center to learn how to arrange for meals to be brought in. In Escalante the telephone number is 826-43317; in Panguitch, 676-2281; and in Bryce Valley, 679-8666. |
