Show Panguitch Bobettes Capture Region 12 Top Spot At SUU The Panguitch High School Bobettes were named first place overall winners in Region 12 Drill Team competition held Friday, Feb. 28 at Southern Utah University's Centrum. They will compete in state competition next week at the Centrum after taking four superiors, (prop, military, dance and novelty) and winning a first place spot in three of the four (prop, military and novelty). The Parowan Rammettes, also with four superiors, were named second place overall winners. Bryce Valley's Brycettes will also travel to state competition after receiving superior ratings in two competition categories (prop and military). In addition to the Panguitch, Bryce Valley, and Parowan teams, four others competed at Friday's meet: the Piute Thunderettes, Enterprise En-terprise Wolverines, Wayne Badgerettes, and Milford Tigerettes. The Panguitch Bobettes have 25 team members, six of whom are seniors, one junior, three sophomores, sopho-mores, and 15 freshmen. Advisor Marlene Miller, who is assisted by co-advisor daughter Monica Tebbs, said that this year's team offered her a greater reward because of the greater challenge of developing an refining a team with so many freshman members. They have practiced daily, six days a week from 6 to 10 p.m. For their novelty routine, they wore "Purple People Eater" costumes cos-tumes with large hot pink heads, one eyeball, and big arms that hung to the floor, big hands and feet and a "slinky" for a tail. They danced and performed to a song made popular in the 1960's tune, "Purple People Eater" and several others of the same era. Alana Davis made the backdrop, two seven-foot monsters, one a man, the other a female. Fully animated, the male monster played a guitar and the female did the "twist." For their prop number, the girls used pom-poms and dutch doors as their props. Otho Bulkley, whose granddaughter was a member of the team, did the initial carpentry work and the rest of the dads came to his rescue to finish up the work. The girls' mothers spent hours creating their costumes, and other student body members helping with back-drops and moving parts. For Bryce Valley's Brycettes, who practice daily during the early moming hours, purple and silver decorated their hoops used in their novelty routine. Moyle Johnson constructed the background scenery for the novelty number, with Kasidi Richards painting the backdrop. The costumes and props were made by Ethel Rich. Advisor to the six seniors, six sophomores and six freshmen comprising the 18-member 18-member team is Tracy Sawyer. |
