John Catmull, son of Mr. and Mrs. Randy Catmull of Boulder, and Shawn Harding, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Harding of Escalante, began weekend training in March. Harding wants to pursue a career as a combat engineer where he will learn to use demolition devices, construct bridges, drive heavy dump trucks and learn other basic construction con-struction skills. Catmull would like to be an architect, ar-chitect, specializing in drafting. Both young men scored well on their tests, and qualified for various bonuses as a result. Harding chose to accept a cash bonus of $2,000 and the new G.I. Bill for $5,040. Catmull selected the G.I. Bill for $5,040 and the student loan repayment repay-ment plan for $10,000. They attended a pre-basic training train-ing camp March 18-19 at Camp Williams where they were instructed in-structed by drill sergeants attached to the Utah Military Academy at Camp Williams. They were instructed in-structed in drill and ceremonies, in marching and facing movements. Instruction in the breakdown and assembling of the M16A1 rifle and the proper wear and fitting of the M17A1 gas mask were also a part of their training. Some of the more important goals of their training is enhancing self-confidence, self-discipline, and developing pride in the service of country. |
