Buckingham said that on the second day of the school one of the students stu-dents in heavy turnout gear fainted on the top of a ladder and had to be brought down. He said the students were very cool and did an admirable job of rescue work. Handling hoses and lines will be part of the course. The students also spent time learning to function with Self Contained Breathing Apparatus Ap-paratus (SCBA). Self or personal safety was an important part of the schooling said Buckingham, because be-cause he said, "If I am trying to rescue a person and am hurt or in anyway incapacitated I cannot help them or myself. If there is no one else around and help is unavailable, I have failed my mission." One of the graduating exercises ' said Buckingham was the "Christmas Tree". This is a long pipe with many perforations. The pipe is connected to a natural gas tank, raised into the air and ignited. With flame pouring out of the pipe, the students, two at a time, and wearing protective gear approach ap-proach the flame with two foam hoses. Being cooled with the water from behind the firefighters approach ap-proach the flame with the foam overlapping and going past the shut off nozzle, reach down and stop the flow of fuel. |
