Show 1 'Self-Reliant' Theme Of Panguitch Session "Becoming Self-reliant" was the theme as members of the Panguitch Utah LDS Stake met Saturday and Sunday for their annual fall conference at the Panguitch Stake Center. Members convened Saturday night to hear church leaders instruct them on various aspects of the conference theme. Personal welfare and family preparedness was addressed by Kendall Brlnkerhoff, second counselor In the stake presidency. He suggested members might be "jack of many trades and master of some" in learning to deal with all facets of physical living. Bishop Dallas Barnhurst of Hatch spoke on how self-reliance enhances service. He points out how difficult it is to give from empty shelves. Lola C. Henrie of Panguitch Third Ward bore personal testimony of how self-reliance had helped her family in time of need. Sister Jane Westwood of Circlevllle, who currently serves as Stake Relief Society president, spoke on self-reliance and service in the home. She related that "all are self-reliant in some ways and dependent in others" and that self-reliance can be strengthened in the home. Stake president Laural Holman concluded the evening as he spoke on perfecting the saints through self-reliance and service to others. He referred to the "gullible gulls" in Florida which were left wanting after the shrimp Fishing fleet that once provided all their food left for other ports. "These gulls did not fish for themsleves, nor did they teach their children to fish," President Holman analyzed, "and they sacrificed their independence for a handout." The stake president went on to discuss how church members could not afford to become "gullible gulls" from any type of welfare or handouts, even if they have a "legal right" to them. Permissiveness and "doling out" are two of the major ways parents create "gullible gulls" in their own children, he said. He concluded the evening saying that saints should strive to be prepared to "become like their Heavenly Father." Sunday's regular session included talks by Nile Sawyer and his wife, Edith, of Hatch who were recently called to serve full time missions as a couple In the Iowa Des Moines Mission; Arthur Dalton and his wife, Nota, of Circlevllle who were recently called as ordinance workers at the St. George LDS Temple; Lance Snow of Marysvale; Eileen Mckee of Panguitch First Ward; and the three members of the Panguitch Stake Presidency: Laurel Holman, Keith Dalton and Kendall Brinkerhoff. |
