Show UDOT Reiterates Plan to Keep Lake Road Open During Winter Howard Richardson reiterated the Utah State Department of Transportation commitment to place the Panguitch Lake Road on the Utah State Road system as soon as Garfield and Iron counties passed resolutions accepting the change. The Utah Department of Transportation District Three director was present as resolutions by both counties were passed on Nov. 2. The road, to be labeled Utah 143, will be officially placed on the state highway system, but since the Both Garfield and Iron Counties will keep Panguitch Lake Road between Brian Head nnd (V state's winter maintenance budget had no provision for snow removal for this winter, the counties agreed to maintain the roads for the winter for continuous access. Iron County officials agreed to spend up to a maximum of $50,000 on the Iron County portion. Garfield County is also committed to keeping its portion open. The two counties have pledged to keep the road open until May 1, 1985. At this time the state road system would take over completely and responsibility would Panguitch Lake open this winter. The commitment by the state marks a major breakthrough for both counties in promoting expanded winter recreation. Commissioner Middleton stated that various tour groups have temporarily stalled their tours until the outcome of this proposal and resolution was resolved. Last winter 32 people from Garfield County were employed at Brian Head and the number could double this winter, Middleton said. Bob Benfield, chairman of the Garfield Travel Council who also serves as chairman of the Color Country Travel Council stated, "This move by UDOT, and Garfield and Iron counties is a major step in bringing greater economic development into the area, not only from major tourist oriented firms but from private individuals as well." |
