Show Area ASPIRE Head Addresses Sessions CEDAR CITY Southern Utah State College's highly acclaimed Upward Bound program was the topic of a presentation scheduled during the Oct. 31 through Nov. 2 Association of Special Programs in Region Eight (ASPIRE) Conference In Denver, Colo. Nancy Robinson, the SUSC Upward Bound program coordinator, addressed ASPIRE participants from Utah, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming and North and South Dakota. Her presentation, "Significant Summer Programs," included slides of activities associated with the Upward Bound program at SUSC. Four Garfield County students participated in the six-week summer program at SUSC during the past season. Currently there are three carry over students in the program from Pangutich High School: eleventh graders Jodi Julander and Travis Fagg and senior Anna Yazzie. There are also eight alternates who program in a major part of the activities: ninth graders Laurel Matthews and Heather Heywood; tenth graders Sonya Marshall, Susan Decker and David Hooper; eleventh grader Jody Allred and seniors Robin Holt and Michelle Frandsen. "Upward Bound has no specified format; however, the federal government has a list of 16 suggested programatlcal concepts that can be adopted by the various Upward Bound directois," Mrs. Robinson said. "Interestingly, our program at SUSC encompasses all 16 suggested concepts, plus many more that we have initiated." Upward Bound and Special Services counseling, tutoring and personal and academic support for college students make up SUSC's Project Alta. 1985 marks the 20th year of federally sponsored TRIO programs Upward Bound, Veteran's Upward Bound, Special Services, Talent Search and Educational Opportunity Centers. SUSC is just completing its 17th year of program participation. Upward Bound is designed for educationally disadvantaged high school students. There are 60 students involved in the SUSC program from Beaver, South Sevier, Panguitch and Cedar City high schools in Utah, and from Page, Tuba City and Kayenta high schools in Arizona. |
