Show Panguitch Wins Big, Bryce Valley Loses on the Road ByJohnYardley Panguitch high rattled off a 59-47 victory over Valley last week in ncn-league action while the Mustangs from Bryce Valley had a tough time on the road in the Kanab tournament. Panguitch scored 17 consecutive points after Valley had opened the game with the first three, on their way to an easy win. Coach Brian McAllister used his entire team, and very effectively, as he played different combinations all night long. A handful of Bobcats scored about the same in a very balanced attack. Lawrence Orton hit for 12, Kris Barney 11, Scott Simkins 9 and Jody Davis and Heath Sartlni 8 each to pace the Bobcats. Probably the most impressive work for Panguitch was on defense where the Bobcats forced a great number of turnovers and played a very fine team defense. For Jim Hoyt's Buffaloes, Bert Harris scored 16 and smooth shooting Mike Norton notched 10 in a losing effort. Panguitch has a bye this week and does not play again until January 13 at Gunnison, followed by another non-league encounter at home versus Enterprise. For Bryce Valley, the trip to Kanab was less than desirable. The Mustangs were actually in both games, but in the 66-53 loss to South Sevier, the BV team only went to the foul line five times during the first three quarters and finished with only 11 attempts. This was a glaring difference as the Rams only scored one more field goal, but had 18 of 24 from the charity stripe. George Thompson led the Mustangs scoring in that one with 14 while Wade Ramsay and Richard Ott both had 11 points. In Friday's consolation game against Kanab, the Mustangs led by Ave with only three minutes to play, but came away with a 59-55 loss. The teams scored an identical number of field goals, with 23 each, but again the Mustangs were defeated from the free-throw line as the Cowboys had 24 opportunities as compared to 15 for Bryce Valley. Thompson again led the scoring with 16 with Ott chipping in 14 and Ramsey 11. Ott was named to the All-Tournament team. Dallin Baugh did some fine floor playing and rebounding and Troy Goulding directed the offense in another good effort for Bryce Valley. For Kanab, Wade Orton, of local heritage, scored 16 In the game against BV and was also named to the all-tourney team. For Coach Ramsay's tronps, the tournament was up against some of the finer teams in this end of the state. Hopefully, the exposure and experience will be helpfl come tournament time. With a basket or two here or there at the right times, the Mustangs could easily have had a couple of wins. This week, the Mustangs entertain the Escalante Moquis in Tropic. In Bantam baksetball action, .Panguitch won two thirds this last week. They won a third over Piute In the Panguitch Invitational and then captured a third over at Enterprise on Friday. Gary Owens and Wally Veater coached in the Panguitch tourney, while Greg Excell was the head mentor at Enterprise. How about those Utah Jazz? 1 1 The Jazz are up leading the division with impressive wins last week over Golden State and Seattle on the road, before finally falling to the hot Denver Nuggests in Denver. A great combination of team offense and hustling defense had the Jazz playing about as good as any team in the NBA at the present time. This week they play Ralph Sampson and the Houston Rockets in Las Vegas. In the January 2 bowl games, it was a day of upsets. UCLA bombed favored Illinois 45-13 in the Rose, Georgia upset Texas 9-7 in the Cotton and top ranked Nebraska lost 31-30 to Miami when the Cor-nhuskers went for the two point conversion and the win in the waning seconds, but came up short. The Nebraska Coach, Tom Osborne, has to be commended for not going for the sure tie with the national championship on the line. In the other of the big four bowls, favored Auburn squeeked by Michigan on an end-of-the-game field goal. It was a great day of very interesting football. |
