Show Garfield Students Prepare For Drug, Alcohol Contest Program Contests will be held at three levels for school children throughout Garfield County to heighten awarenss of drug and alcohol problems. Sponsored jointly by the Garfield County Sheriff, police departments, the Parent Teacher Association, the Chemical Task Force People and Family Life Services, the contests are expected to include entries from children in all grade levels who will also learn more about drug and alcohol abuse. A member of the sheriff's department will travel to schools throughout the county to talk to students explaining the program and the contest rules for each grade level. Division One contest participants in grades K-5 will enter a coloring contest with six winners chosen to receive awards in each elementary school. Prizes will include time spent with a police officer, picture and certificate and the grand prize winner selected from among the 30 elementary finalists will receive a $50 cash prize. Division Two will be a poster drawing contest for students in grades 6, 7 and 8, with three winners chosen in each junior high school in the county. Each will receive a $5 cash prize and the county-wide winner, $50. Division Three contestants will compete in a bumper sticker slogan contest. Students in grades 9 through 12 are eligible to participate with two winners to be selected from among the four grades at each high school. Each winner will receive a $10 prize with the eight countywide winners vying for the grand prize of $50 and reproduction by Family Life Services of the slogan on a bumper sticker for distribution in the county. Each community in the county has received a letter from Sheriff Vic Middleton requesting a donation of $35 to provide prizes in their local schools. The sheriff's department will donate the grand prize money for countywide winners. PTA members will be contacted by Neal Smith, Family Life Services Alcohol and Drug Abuses social worker to assist in distribution of winning entries in store windows and other places where the public can view the students' work. Smith will also organize a panel of judges for the campaign which is spearheaded by Marjorie Schuldt who starts work this month as Garfield and Kane counties' Alcohol and Drug Abuse social worker. Dorothy Ball will act as coordinating chairperson for Ms. Schuldt in the campaign in Garfield County. All law enforcement officers will be available to discuss the problems of alcohol and drug abuse with any group throughout the county. Theme for this year's contest in the county is "It's a New Year: Make a New Years Resolution on Drinking and Driving." Entries will be accepted January 23 through 27 with winners to be f announced and placed on display January 30. Certificates will be awarded and prizes presented February 1 through 10. |
