Show Utah Education Reform Meet Set Here Tonight Superintendent of Garfield County School District Henry Jolley announced this week a special hearing on education reform to be held Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Media Center of Panguitch High School. The meeting was slated for one hour prior to the regular monthly (scheduled school board meeting and will introduce citizens to the Education Reform Steering Committee's report on education reform for the state of Utah. Gov. Scott Matheson organized the committee one year ago in cooperation with the State Legislature to develop and propose a plan for education in Utah. I Hearings are being held statewide to solicit public viewpoints as to possible revision of committee (roposals prior to the transmission of the report to the Legislature. Jolley feels the need for the public to attend to fully acquaint themselves with the committee proposals. He said, "It is important for the public to hear all information available about the current proposals, so they can either support, amend or oppose the contents of the committee report." Several important dignitaries concerned with the educaiton issue have been invited to attend Thursday evening. Sen. Ivan Matheson, (R-Cedar City) who had been scheduled to attend and tender remarks sent his apologies this week to Jolley as he has been hospitalized with a sudden illness. State Representative James Yardley, (R-Panguitch) will be in attendance along with steering committee representatives. A special 15 minute slide sound presentation narrated by Gov. Matheson will be offered, with question and answer period to follow. The report, entitled "Education in Utah: A Call to Action," will be the basic subject of discussion for the public hearing, however a brief presentation will also be offered on small schools. Former Garfield School District Supt. Kerry Nelson, currently a specialist with the State Office of Education will provide a short slide sound presentation on the "needs of small schools" for those in attendance.
