Show ' JUST STUFF Nineteen eighty four the year that has loomed ominously in the future has arrived. It came wtih a certain air of foreboding, due to the society depicted in George Orwell's book "1984". But despite this harbinger of doom, the new year brought no Big Brother, no slogans of party loyalty or banners boasting "War Is Peace." Instead, it was ushered in like any other new year, with hats and horns and serpentine streamers. And now it stretches before us unsullied, untried and full of the unknown. Over 360 days just waiting to be experienced; more than 8,640 hours to be filled however we choose. Anything could happen. We could discover life on another planet, or be discovered ourselves. There could be great strides made in medicine, perhaps a cure for cancer or even the common cold. The new year might bring world peace, or at least our marines home. This could be the year for inflation, unemployment and prices to go down, and job opportunities, and wages to go up. It's a new year, anything could happen. It will be full of campaign slogans, promises, speeches and posters, but I don't think anyone is sure who is running for what. It lies ahead of us, ready to be conquered, one day at a time, to fill as we wish. May 1984 be as good, if not better, than its predecessor, '83. Happy New Year. |
