Show It Makes Cents BY VI JUDGE - Dear Vi: We were always getting shocks when we wore bedroom slippers even after we had our carpets sprayed with some antistatic stuff. My husband solved that problem by gluing leftover carpet scraps cut to fit on the soles of all our house slippers. This really worked for us. No more shocks when we walk across the carpet. Evelyn Olmstead, Logan, Utah Dear Vi: We use cups not just for drinks but for cereal, soup, puddings, fruit almost everything we give our small children to eat. Their little hands can easily hold onto a cup handle so that many spills are avoided. We also keep cups in a lower drawer where the kiddies can reach them without having to climb up to get one. I also went to tell you that we use a windshield washing solution on our mirrors to keep them from steaming up. We keep a spray bottle full in the bathroom. So convenient to use that way. MaryB., Payson, Utah Dear Vi: If you get as exasperated as I used to when trying to open the proudce bagsg you tear off a roll at the grocery store, you'll be glad as I am to know that they open easily when you rub them on your sleeve two or three times. The transfer of static electricity from you to the bag does the trick, it seems. At any rate, it works. If you need to stack drinking glasses because of lack of space, put a square of waxed paper between each one. I keep a stack of pre-cut squares in a little box on the shelf for this purpose. Hope Lemmon, Las Vegas Dear Vi: As a single-parent father trying to make a home for two young boys, I want you to know how helpful your column is to me. One of our pesky problems is trying to find socks that match. It drives me crazy, especially in the morning when we are trying to get off to school and work. Any suggestions? A Dad Trying to be a Good Mom I surely have some suggestions for you, Dad, along with my love and admiration for your attitude and efforts. Insist that socks be folded or tie loosely together and put in the hamper as soon as they are taken off. Keep a box of large safety pins in the wash room. Pin socks together at the toe where the material is firm, BEFORE putting them in the machine. And finally, when buying socks forget about variety and buy a half dozen pair alike (A different color or style for each person, though.) so that you can match up good pairs out of odd socks when their mates get tears or holes in them. This is especially helpful with athletic socks with stripes at the top. When I'm matching socks up at my daughter's house (I wish she'd make her family do what I'm telling you to do.) I find dozens of socks with stripes that are almost, but not quite alike. I know manufacturers are fond of putting three or four pair, each different, in one package, but if we insist, we can buy them separately and alike and thus save lots of match-up problems. Dear Vi: I have long fingernails, so when taking face cream out of a jar, I use the back of my thumb nail so that I don't have the mess of cream under my nails. Ruth S.Wood, Circleville, Ut. Dear Vi: When our white metal cabinets lost their luster and smooth surface after many years of use, we covered them with some adhesive-backed paper white with gold specks to match the counter tops. They look great and no one knows they are covered unless we tell them. It's durable, too. In fact, we have only had to re-cover them once in the last fourteen eyars. Susan Sprague, Richfield, Ut.
