Show 6-State Power Blackout A six-state power black-out on Wednesday evening affected Garkane Power Association's southern system, which includes all of Garfbld and Kane counties in ' Utah, and portions of Mohave and Coconino counties in Arizona. The power went off at approximately 6:45 p.m. and was restoied to Garkane's System at 7:20 p.m. Company spokesman Carl Albrecht, said the problem originated in northern California when a major transmission line shut down, shifting the load to other large transmission facilities, interconnected and the overload on each line caused a "domino effect" on systems throughout the west, eventually reaching Glen Canyon Dam, where Garkane's power source originates from it's line constructed directly into the Glen Canyon facility. Approximately 3,600 Garkane customers were without power for 30 mintues, as well as customers in Kanab, and Fredonia, Ariz, who are served by Utah Power and Light over Garkane's transmission lines. Utility officials from all western states involved are still investigating the outage, which left large cities in other states without power for a number of hours. |
