Show Utah Guard to salute Eight Citizens for Contributions I The Utah National Guard will salute eight outstanding citizens for their contributions to country and community at the 23d annual Minuteman Awards Banquet March 3 at the Ft. Douglas Officer's Club. The formal event is sponsored "By the Honorary Colonels Corps of Utah and will feature the commanding general of the United States Army Forces Command, Gen. R. E. Cavazos, as guest speaker. "The banquet is to recognize the accomplishments of people who have performed a service either to the Utah National Guard, the state of Utah, the nation, or their fellow man," said Lt. Col. Jerry Norton, awards committee chairman. The names of the winners will be announced the night of the banquet. Past recipients include Governors George B. Clyde, Calvin Rampton and Scott Matheson, and leaders of church, education, business and government from throughout the state. The awardees are nominated by the major commands within the Guard and by the Honorary Colonels Corps, and submitted to an awards committee made up of senior Guard officials, who make the final selection, according to Brig. Gen. John Lv Matthews, the state adjutant general. "We are honored to have Gen. Cavazos come and visit us," said Mathews. Cavazos oversees the headquarters which commands all active and reserve Army forces in the continental United States. Gen, Cavazos is a veteran of Korea and Vietnam and was twice awarded the nation's second - highest combat decoration, the Distinguished Service Cross. Senior military commanders from the western United States are expected to attend the function along with Utah National Guard officials, and members of the Honorary Colonels Corps, a group of civic and business leaders dedicated to supporting Guard programs and activities. "This Is our way of saying thanks to the good deeds which often don't get the recognition they deserve," said Gen. Mathews. "Without the efforts of dedicated citizens like these, our job In the military would be much more difficult to accomplish."
