Show SJieep and Lamb Inventory Shows Decline on Ut. Farms Sheep and lambs on Utah farms and ranches declined in 1982 according to the Utah Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. Inventory numbers on January 1, 1983 dropped to 567,000 head, a reduction of 11 percent. Most of the decline was noted in stock sheep, (ewes in particular) with 50,000 head of mother ewes disappearing from inventory numbers. Lambs for replacement purposes declined also, further pointing to producer intentions to raise fewer sheep. Sheep and lambs on feed, on the other hand increased. At the end of 1982, a total of 30,000 head were on concentrated feed in feed lots and on farms and ranches. The 1982 lamb crop at 446,000 head was down 7 percent from last year. The total value of the January 1 inventories was set at $32.8 million, down $12.1 million or 6 percent from last year. All sheep and lamb inventory in the United States on January 1, 1983 totaled 11.9 million head, down 8 percent from the 13.0 million head a year earlier. This is the lowest all sheep and lamb inventory of record. The value of all sheep and lambs on hand January 1, 1983, totaled $616 million, down 17 percnet from a year ago. The average value per head was $51.70, down $5.20 from last year. |
