Show Bobcats Edge Bryce In 70-66 Encounter By John Yardley Bryce Valley High School gave undefeated Panguitch High all they wanted Thursday night in Panguitch before finally bowing 70-66 to the Bobcats. The game opened the way it ended, with each team trading baskets and foul shots. George Thompson led the first half BV scoring with an array of fine moves inside, while Dale Orton worked the baseline very effectively to lead the Bobcats. Panguitch pulled out to a 37-27 half-time lead and It looked as though the 'Cats were safely on their way to a perfect 10-0 league record. The Mustangs had other thougths, however, as they came out firing in the second half to close the gap 53-47 after three periods. After Bryce Valley cut the Panguitch lead to as few as four on several occasions behind the scoring of Richard Ott and Wade Ramsay in the fourth quarter, the Bobcats rallied to maintain the lead on clutch shooting by Kris Barney, Rick Robison, Donny Leach and Orton. With still more than five minutes to play, Robison, the Panguitch point guard fouled out. Shortly thereafter, Dallin Baugh the point guard for Bryce Valley also went to the bench with five fouls. With only ' 2:50 to play, Dale Orton fouled out for the Bobcats with 20 points. That appeared to give Bryce Valley the edge for the moment, but high scoring George Thompson fouled out for the Mustangs within the next minute or so after netting 22 big points for BV. Donny Leach then took over the show, and really put away the game on a nice pass from Kris Barney inside the last minute as he went down the lane for a layup. Korry Soper and Nate Brinkcrhoff hit pressure foul shots after that while Bryce Valley, unwilling to die easy, got a couple of baskets from Steve Mecham and Dutton to cut the final score to 70-66. Scoring for Panguitch was again well balanced with Leach hitting 22, Orton 20, Barney 12 and Robison 11. For Bryce Valley, the talented junior corps led the barrage with Thompson nailing down 22, Ott 21 and Ramsey 17. The Escalante Moquis were idle this week, as coaches Jim Smith and Brent Cottam were in Panguitch to have a look at their next weeks opponent, Bryce Valley. |
