Show Editoral . . . Bank Help Gives Students Real-Life Aid Chief among the "good ideas" we've seen lately is the program sponsored by Zions First National Bank in Panguitch to teach local high school students how to manage their money. In its third year at Panguitch High School, the program is a two-week, 45 minutes-a-day mini-course in the basics of savings, checking and credit. The course was developed through the auspices of the Utah Bankers Association with assistance from education specialists. Offered free-of-charge to the school district by the bank which supplies experienced bank personnel to supervise, the course is coordinated through the school district counselor. Bank specialists work with teachers and students to familiarize students with the role of banking in today's society. With banking possibilities becoming ever more diversified and complicated, teaching the youth who will soon join the work force, the variety of functions a bank performs can help them get off to a better start as they leave high school. We've all heard of the student who graduates from high school not knowing how to write a check or balance a checkbook, not having the slightest acquaintance with credit, debt or interest rates. Chances are good it won't happen in Panguitch. |
