Show Catholic Priest is Honored for Service Father Joseph Valine O.P., pastor of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Panguitch and St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Milford, was nominated to the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre by Bishiop Wiegand of Diocese of Salt Lake in recognition of 42 years in the diocese. Membership in the order is the highest papel award which can be conferred on clergy and laity. Fr. Valine was born in the Azores Islands and educated in California. Entering the Dominican order in 1921, he attended St. Thomas College, River Forest, 111. and later, the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. He was ordained in 1929 and went to the Diocese of Salt Lake City in 1941. He was the first pastor in Logan, and also established St. Henry's Parish, Brigham City. In 1947 he was assigned pastor of parishes in Richfield and Milford. While serving here he built St. Dominic's chapel near Bryce Canyon National Park; St. Bridget's in Milford, St. Michael's in Panguitch and St. Christopher's in Kanab. He raised money by farming and selling doughnuts which he makes himself. In 1979 he celebrated 50 years in the priesthood. In a letter nominating Fr. Valine to the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, Bishop Wiegand said, "His kindness and priestly zeal have deeply touched the people he meets." special Massat'the'lrivestiture of the shoulder cape of the order will be at the Cathedral of the Madeliene, Salt Lake City on February 10 at 7:30 p.m. Local members of St. Michael's expressed the great pride and happiness they feel for Fr. Valine. He celebrated his 85th birthday at Christmas with the best wishes and blessings of his parishioners. Many days bucking some pretty cold weather, Ray Barnes, Panguitch, works to place street signs back on corner poles after he voluntarily fixed and re painted signs in city beautification effort. Panguitch City Council praised Rarnes'unse Ifish efforts this week. |
