Show Cosmos Grab Girls Crown fly John Yardley The girls softball league ended a fun season Saturday as the Cosmos topped the Popups In a playoff game for the league title. The two teams had ended the season all tied up and the playoff was necessary to determine the league champion. The Cosmos with three coaches during the year, LaRae Nay, Jean Cooper and Debbie Hatch, rallied together for an 18-11 victory over the Barbara Orton and Rolayne Davis coached Popups. Suzette Simkins pitched the entire game for the winners and Kammy Englestead made the defensive play of the game for the winners and Kammy Englestad made the defensive play of the game for the Cosmos. Charlene Crosby and Michelle Leach continued their- fine play for the Popups. Both teams had a great season. In mens softball the S&C maintained its perfect season record this week as they clipped the Meat House 10-7. S&C, now 8-0, had already clinched the first half title and assured themselves of being in the post season tournament. The Meat House was again short some key players but still played a tough game. In the other game on Wednesday, the Waterhole tipped Excells in a close one, 13-11. Thursday's games saw the SUE shut out Excells and display their wealth of talent. The SUE, unable to get uncorked early in the season, could be hard to hold the second half if they get rolling. The other game Thursday saw the Meat House and the Waterhole scheduled to do battle, but the Meat House had to forfeit. That gave the Waterhole two wins for the week as they continued to Dlav well. The womens fast pitch team traveled to Beaver Wednesday for the league tournament. Trudi Owens made a terrific catch in the last inning with runners on base to seal a 12-11 win for Panguitch. The women had gone into the last inning trailing by three runs after leading most of the game, but rallied for four in the last inning. Drawing a bye on Thursday, the S&C women played the talented Hay's team on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Ray's, undefeated all years, knocked off Panguitch and sent them to the 10 p.m consolation game. The women ran into trouble, however, in that final game- and dropped it, too. The travel and double games proved too much for them to hold . on arid the season was over. Boys Little League action in All-Star tournament play Monday in Cedar City saw the Panguitch team take it on the chin 22-5. The boys made a nice effort and played hard. Coaches Wayne and Laurel Holman are in charge of the All-Stars this year. In Tuesday's game the boys lost to Parowan in a valiant effort. Clint Barney was Tuesday's starting pitcher and Jason Orton started on Monday. Nationally the British Open held our attention locally as Bobby Clam-pett of BYU held a 5-stroke lead with two rounds to go, but lost 12 strokes off par in the final two days to finish well back. Tom Watson was the winner his third British Open title. In baseball, Bruce Hurst of Panguitch and St. George roots, went seven strong innings and allowed two runs last Saturday on national TV Bruce has been in the Red Sox starting rotation for the past couple of months. The All-star game held last Tuesday in Montreal was won as usual by the National league. Dave Concepcion of the Reds had the big blast, a two-run homer to spark the 4-1 triumph. |
