Show Makes Cents ! ijT Dear Readers: Winter's here again. ' It's hard to realize from 1 way out here in the i Caribbean tropics, where , it's hot all year round. In ; looking through my : collection of ideas, nevertheless, I've J compiled some winter I helps for you. 1. When snow melts off I car onto garage floor, carrying with it all that t salt, cinders, and grime, j leaving floor very dirty and subject to erosion ) from the salt, here's an 5 easy-does-it remedy. i Shovel fresh snow onto floor, sweep out, and floor's clean again. J 2. Foggy windows; kids ) want to see out: set a fan in front of the window. Or J wipe with a bit of dish detergent on a clean cloth. (You can rinse and J wipe dry later.) Or use a 1 def ogging mit. 5 (Automotive stores sell them.) k 3. House temp on low sides means fewer colds, 3 healthier nose and throat linings. To stay com 5 fortable, wear warm clothing when inside. A k toboggan cap helps a lot, as does a scarf around the j neck. Wear two caps D outside when it's very 3 cold. Have you noticed that hands and feet get cold when in plastic J gloves or boots when 3 snow melts on them. 3 Wear cotton gloves and 5 sox underneath. Wear two or three pairs of k panty hose when outside J in a dress, or inside either. Instead of 5 . omen'.s all-weather 5 boots (they're usually x thin soled with little k traction) buy men's heavy-duty rubber boots 3 to wear over regular shoes. x , 4. If you have to drive x on slippery roads, always z carry a bag of gravel and - a bag of ashes in car 5 trunk. Lengths of screen also help when car can't g get enough traction to x move on ice. Also carry 2 fat candles, matches and S plastic bags. Between the O two, you can keep warm g inside a stalled car for g many hours. g 5. Do you have drafty halls, stair wells, or x windows? Slip a tension rod through wide hem of a 5 sheet. Hang inside window or door frame, g This "stops cold" that cold draft. g 6. It's often difficult to S get heavy things q (sweaters, polo shirts etc.) dry during cold, g stormy weather. The S screen from your storm window (you use it only in O summer anyway) set across a bathtub makes a g good drying rack. The air ix circulates underneath and all around. For g speedier drying, lay a h sweater flat on a bath j towel; cover with second towel; walk on it. Or roll ix it with a rolling pin. This removes lots of water. H The time's passing fast. iS We'll be home in good old 5 U.S.A. befpre we know it. g Foreign lands are in ig teresting, but there's w nothing like home, g Meantime, keep warm 6 out there while we're trying to keep cool out jg here. g With love, Vi DearVi: g We love baked 6 potatoes, but they require much time. I've learned g to bake them while jig baking something else, S To hurry them up, I lay them directly on the over )0 rack and turn a heav) iron dutch oven ovei them. They bake in half the time. Idonna Dear Vi: I'm glad little girls are wearing pinafores again. Some of my little girls' dresses were too tight and too short, so I opened the side seams, trimmed the raw edges and cut out the sleeves. I then needed to merely hem or face the edges and add a double-button tab to hold the sides together at the waistline. My daughters now have cute pinafores to wear over simpler dresses. Could you use a little more "Pin money?" $2.00 for each original idea used here. Just jot yours down on a scrap of paper and mail to "It Makes Cents" c o this newspaper. |
