Show Robert E. Smiths Gather HENRIEVILLE The Robert Earl and Caroline Evelyn Goulding Smith family reunion was held July 2 through 5 at Henrieville. Earl and Caroline Goulding were the parents of 11 children, seven sons and four daughters, all born and reared in Henrieville. The family home has for the past 20 years been owned by their son Lee Smith. Their seven sons have all served in various branches of the armed forces. Their oldest son, Guy Nephi, was killed in action July 30, 1945, during World War II. Son Don Allen died Nov. 1, 1971 at Denver, Colo, where he served as an Army lab technician. All of the nine living sons and daughters and their wives and husbands and many of their children attended the reunion. The wife and family of Don Smith were also there. It was the first time since the death of Robert Earl 34 years ago that the Smith children have all been together. The reunion was celebrated with a supper at Kodachrome Basin State Reserve July 2 featuring salmon and shrimp flown in from Alaska for the occasion. July 3 was scheduled for visiting, pictures, and genealogy, with a watermelon bust at noon and a mutton supper in the evening at the Henrieville Schoolhouse Park. On July 4 family members attended the dedication of the Shakespear Arch at Kodachrome and joined the Fourth of July celebration at Henrieville and Tropic. Another salmon supper was enjoyed that evening at the Schoolhouse Park. July 5 family members joined other grandchildren at the James Edward Smith family reunion held at Kodachrome. Three quilts were raffled off, with the full size quilt going to Ida Stoddard, the twin size to. Van Smith, and the baby quilt to Jeanne Potter, Ida's daughter. Jeanne Potter received the prize for having traveled the greatest distance to attend the reunion more than 1,100 miles. Family members attending were: Van and Ella Smith and grandson Rodney, Anchorage, Alaska; Ida Smith Stoddard, daughters, Jeanne Potter, Kathy Mclnelly, and granddaughters Stephanie and Katie Potter, Anchorage; John and Amy Smith Clarke, Hawthorne, Nev.; Durward and Joy Smith Ballard, daughter Elaine, son Jason and his wife Hazel, daughter Shirley and Danny Button and grandson Kurt, all of Hurricane. Also attending were Jed and Garneal Smith and family, Doren, Dane and Tina of Escalante; Lee and Thelma Smith and family, Ben, Boyd, Leah, Bart and wife Shirlie, John (Bud) and wife Becky of Henrieville. Other family members attending were Tony and Pat Manardi and family, Alan Smith, Gary Smith, and Melissa Smith of Kalispell, Mont. Roe and Kolleen Smith and family, del, Leri, Sue, Edy, and Eli of Smithfield were in attendance as well as Vee and Judy Smith and family, David, Dale, and Dan of Hurricane. Also, Max and Loa Smith Sevy and family, Rob, Carlline, Jan, Eric, and Carl of Healdsburg, Calif. Virginia Smith, one of two living aunts, also attended. |
