Show Natural Resources Study A newly completed survey or assessment of the nation's renewable natural resources situation and a Forest Service program to help meet the nation's projected needs of these were released this week. The assessment and recommended program were summarized in "The 1980 Report to Congress on the Nation's Renewable Resources" recently sent to Congress by President Carter. The report looks at projected renewable resource needs related to recreation, timber, water, wildlife and fish, wilderness and other uses of forest and rangelands. It also outlines a new program for Forest Service that gives cooperative assistance to states and private individuals, and forestry research to help meet anticipated national needs. The report is a synopsis of two specialized documents, "An Assessment of Forest and Rangeland Situation in the United States" and "A Recommended Renewable Resource Program." Both were prepared by the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. The 1979 assessment is the second analysis of the renewable resources, rangeland, and associated waters following a similar one prepared in 1975. It meets the provisions of the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resource Planning Act of 1974 and the National Forest Management Act of 1976. The assessment and the program is available for public review at National Forest headquarters and in offices of the Forest and Range Experiment Station throughout the Intermountain West. |
