Show r Valley Edges Panguitch; T-Birds Continue Region Eight Top Spot Coach Quinn Ncwby's Buffaloes are continuing the stampede in Division II, beating the Bobcats of Panguitch 63-52. Valley jumped to an early 10-point lead and Panguitch couldn't make up the deficit, even though Robert Barney, Lee Smith and Mike Dalton cut the lead to five throughout the game. Shane Mlllett, Kelly Coon and Brian Jenkins of Piute handed Bryce Valley a 75-59 defeat at Tropic. In spite of Link Chynoweth and Robert Jolley's offensive thrust, Clair Ramsey's Mustangs couldn't stay with the big front line of the Thun-derbirds. Richard Lyman canned 26 points to lead the Kscalante Moquis but the ine effort couldn't stay with Jeff Chappell and crew of Wayne which dropped the Moquis 69-56. Ronnie Hill and Randy Warren combined for a fantastic weekend for the Gunnison Bulldogs causing havoc in the Region Eight standings and perhaps the 1A polls. Hill and his teammates handed undefeated Milford its first loss in league play 72-61 at Milford Saturday night. "They wanted that game bad, and they got it. They are a well-disciplined team and they hustled everywhere on the court," said shell-shocked Milford coach Joe Hillock. The Tigers dropped the Bulldogs by 12 earlier in the season. However the Bulldogs returned the favor to open the second half of Division I action. While Joe Hillock was in shotit, coach Lynn Parsons watched a 12-point lead dwindle in the final four minutes, giving Enterprise a 60-59 upset victory. The Beavers led 51-39 behind Shane Blackner's 21-point output, but were outscored 17-3 over a three-minute pe.'iod, w hen they went cold from the field. Rohn Thomas and Robert Banks came off the Wolves' bench, sparkinp the last-quarter surge for coach Kendall Banks. Beaver missed three consecutive one-and-one situations during the final seconds, while Banks converted for the Wolves on the opposite end. The Beavers had the final shot at the buzzer, but it wasn't meant to be and Enterprise came away with a surprise victory. a 75-48 win over Parowan with most of its 12-man crew scoring, Troy Hallows, Todd Kennedy, and Kirby Nelson led the pace, while Bret Matheson was high for the Rams with 14. In Friday night's action, Gunnison, Beaver, Kanab, Valley, and Escalante were the winners in the full slate of action. The Gunnison Bulldogs, behind the classic shooting of Hill (28 points) and Warren (22 points) stunned the North Sevier Wolves 66-61 Friday night at Gunnison. Hill put on a fine performance with his shooting and rebounding, leading his teammates to an exciting victory. "Our defense played well and we rebounded well, which made the difference In the game," commented Bulldog coach Dan Hill. Beaver ended a dry spell, knocking off Parowan 52-40 at Ram-villc behind Shane Blackner's 16-polnt effort. "We played well the first half, then we sputtered here and there, but we won. We really needed that win," said a relieved Beaver coach Lynn Parsons. The Beavers have lost some barnburners, and needed the victory going into the second half of league play. Coach Kendall Banks of Enterprise had his home fans screaming upset for three and a half quarters until Hal Hamblln's Cowboys let the air out of the upset-minded Wolves. The Cowboys captured a 79-64 win, but they had to hang on for dear life until midway through the fourth period. |
