Show Womens' Food Program Operating in County WIC, a special supplemental food program for women, infants, and children, is now operating in Garfield County stated Esther Reaves, Garfield County Health Nurse. Designed to provide high protein, iron-fortified foods to infants and children during the most critical growing period of their lives and to pregnant women, the WIC program issues food vouchers at no cost to those eligible and is planned to supplement and nutritionally improve the diet. Redeemable at any participating grocery store, the vouchers may be obtained after qualifying at a local WIC clinic. High risk pregnant, lactating, or post-partum women who are within the income guidelines and who exhibit an inadequate nutritional pattern, anemia, a history of prematurity, miscarriage, congenital anomalies, still brith, or neonatal death are eligible. Infants and children whose parents are within the income guidelines and who display evidence of deficient patterns of growth, anemia, inadequate nutritional patterns, or low birthweight may also qualify. |
