Show Garfield Group Part Of Workshop Program A public involvement workshop, sponsored by the State Board of Education at the Hilton Inn in Provo was attended by Garfield County residents involved with the community education process. Responding to a special request for the Garfield area to paiticipate in the training session, representatives presented a panel discussion on "Participation of Citizen Based Groups in Decision Making in the Community". Attending were Douglas Fonnesbeck, chairman of Garfield County School Board: Superintendent Henry E. Jolley, Garfield County School District; Howard Neilsen, principal, Bryce Valley High School; Bruce Owens, principal, Panguitch Elementary; Hal Shurtz, principal, Escalante Elementary; Stanley Stott, David Frost and Roene Dickinson, community education directors; and Jay Riggs, Marie Liston and Trissa Fonnesbeck, Panguitch community council members. Special classes at the seminar were held for principals and for community education directors. The ultimate goal of the community group should be better community involvement in all decision making processes. The Garfield rea was pinpointe d as a target area typifying rural schools and rural living in which to activate community school concepts and where such concepts might be successful in their application to the community. Panguitch has had a successful year in which the community school concept has progressed rapidly with full training of council memfers completed. The Bryce Valley area community council has also been formed with some training having been accomplished. The Escalante Boulder area will be forming its community council within the next few weeks. The services of Joe Rickards, community ed specialist, State Board of Education, have been made available to all three areas. 1 |
