Show Priorities Listed In Alcohol-Drug Abuse Local representatives to the Panguitch Hatch Community Council met ThuTLday evening in a follow-up effort of their earlier meeting in November to discuss problem areas that were noted concerning alcohol and drug abuse in the local community and possible preventative solutions to these problems. The general meeting of the group was under the guidance of district community education coordinator, Stanley Stott. Stott organized those attending into four committee groups to pinpoint "target" areas to cover in limited time that was available. Discussion groups covering education, public awareness, law enforcement and activities were located in various parts of the building to individually discuss problems in their respective categories, set priorities of action to be taken and report back to general membership in attendance. Committee chairmen were selected in each of the four areas of concern. Selected to chair the law enforcement group was Don Kidder, Kay Henderson for activities, Teora Heap for public awareness and Esther Reaves along with Panguitch Hatch PTA representatives. Listed in highest priority rating in the law enforcement category is to encourage community involvement in pinpointing violators of drug and alcohol abuse in local areas. Picked as "most important" project to emphasize in the education category was developing of teaching units on smoking and drug abuse to be used to update both youth and parent's knowledge in these areas. Participants on the public awareness committee concluded their priority must be set on creating better communication and awareness of the problems existing in this community. The final committee on activities rendered the opinion that the youth generally need to be involved continually to avoid pitfalls brought on by boredom and too much "spare"' time. Stott encourages participation by any interested individuals at future meetings planned for the first Thursday evening of each month. ' - |
