Show Road Games Prove Fruitful For Region Eight Basketball Teams Four cases in Region Eight proved a point that good basketball teams can win on the road. Panguitch topped Escalante 50-46; Wayne toppled Bryce Valley 77-52; Gunnison ripped Parowan 69-39; and Milford clobbered Enterprise, 85-46. Panguitch (4-0) and Wayne (3-1) top the region's Division Two Gunnison (5-0) and Milford (4-1) lead Division One. In other battles, Kanab (3-2) won the title of Best of the Rest in Division One with a 70-69 win over North Sevier (2-3). In Division Two, Piute picked up its first league win, 54-50 over win less Valley, The charm of an established winner rode with Panguitch. The Bobcats trailed almost from the opening whistle by a slim margin. Then midway through the final quarter, the Bobcats came from behind and held onto a slim advantage until the final buzzer. Russell Griffin ; led the Moqui scoring in the tight defensive struggle. Jeff Bowens were high man for the unbeaten Bobcats. Both teams were forced into numerous turnovers. Wayne's Tim Dietline got hot inside in the final four mintues at Tropic to break open what had been a close game. Midway through the final period the Badgers were nursing a four-point lead; then Dietline turned on. Bryce Valley got super performances trom Martin Ramsay and Klin Chynoweth again this week. Ramsay hit 30 points and Chynoweth 26. The rest of the Mustang squad totaled only six points. Dietline finished with 26 points, Jeff Hanks scored 23, Brad Brinkerhoff 12 and Jan Ellett 10 for Wayne. Quick and accurate Gunnison shooting and passing finally overcame a determined Parowan defense, and the Bulldogs ran away from the Rams in the second half. Parowan worked hard on defense and was strong on the boards to stay within eight points, 30-22 at half-time. Greg Hill led the Gunnison scoring with 17 points despite tight defense applied by Ram Tom Robinson. Brent Nielson hit 16 and Ron May 12. Robinson was tops for Parowan with 10. Defensive pressure on Enterprise guards and strong rebounding paid big dividends for Milford. The Tigers Jumped ahead by 15 points in the first quarter and were never headed. Good Milford outside shooting just added to the Enterprise woe. Gary Meyer scored 20 points, randy Kerr 19, Ken Jones 16 and Brad Kirk 10. The Tigers shut down the unusually high scoring Enterprise guards with just nine points, but Cort Clvoe came through with 18 and Blaine Farnsworth 13 for the Wolves. North Sevier got into foul trouble early and was haunted all nieht bv Kanab free throws. The Cowboys, who held a slim lead most of the time, hit 28 of 41 free throw attempts to chalk up their win. Meanwhile, the Wolves hit 13 of only 19 attempts, fouled out Shanon Heaps, and had five other players with four personals each. Travis Simpson put on a good personal show for the Wolves with 28 points. Heaps hit 15. For Kanab Kevin Burning scored 24, Don Glover 17, Mark Corry 16, and Kim Govoer 10. Piute struggled a bit before picking up its first league win of the season. The Thunderbirds led by up to 14 points in the first half, then were forced to hold on in the final minutes as Valley threw together a last gasp rally. Each team put three men in double figure scoring. For Valley it was Brad Lamb with 15, Charles Heaton with 13 and Ivan Frost with 10. Chad Price was high for Piute with 16; Scott Bagley scored 14 and Kim Dalton 11. |
