String Teachers ( AST A) to invite some of the best string instrument instructors in the country for their 4th annual woikshop, June on the University of Utah campus The AST A Workshop m cooperation with the University of Utah Department of Music and the Utah String Teachers under the is Association, dnection of Norma Lee Madsen, an accomplished musician and mstrucloi Participating in the ASTA (American String Teachers Assn.) National Summer String Conference beginning Monday at the University of Utah will be John Kendall, left, conductor and clinician; Jean Sudbury, top Elizabeth left, Morley, soloists; and cellist Leonard Feldman, right. J Miss Madsen is a violinist with the Utah String Quartet and the Utah Symphony, and an adjunct assistant professor of music at the University of Utah She has coordinated the workshop for string teachers, and amateur professional string players, chamber music players and anyone over the age of 12 who is interested m string instrument instruction. Student Concert The instructors conference features both student and faculty concerts and recitals, master classes, string pedagogy sessions, lectures, two-wee- k mstiuition in conducting an concert fereme all-co- n and ouimstia Special instiuctois include Prof John Kendall, internationally famous violinist, clinician author and conductor, and Elame Richey, renowned concert violinist and master tea her. Prof Kendall, professor of string development at South- ern Illinois Universitys Edwardsville campus, graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory, Oberlin, Ohio, and earned a master ot arts degree from Columbia Teachers College He studied conducting under Fntz Mahler at Julliard School of Music and violin with such notables as Hans Letz, Christine Dethier and Tossy Spivakovsky. Traveled to Japan Prof. Kendall has traveled to Japan to work with Slnnichi Suzuki and observe his teaching methods. He has become an authority of Suzukis method of teaching, a method employing listenmg-then-playin- g His sectechniques ond week series of workshop lectures will involve explanaof tions and demonstrations this approach.
