We will be displaying the paintings of Brandon Cook in the Main Gallery, the floral paintings of Jennie Taylor in the Second Floor Gallery, and smaller paintings by Robert A. Call in the Carriage House Gallery. An opening reception for the exhibits is scheduled for Friday, May 2 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in participation with the Historic 25 street stroll. Admission is free. The public is invited. Brandon Cook lives in Ogden Valley. He says “my focus is on painting as a process—on pushing the media of paint on canvas in new ways, toward new edges. I start with abstract designs and patterns in the landscape. I paint extreme ranges of value, color, texture, thickness, and thinness. I brush into the canvas, rub it, spatter it, scumble it, glaze it. I use brushes, rags, cotton swabs, may hand, fast strokes, short strokes, wet over dry, wet in wet. I throw paint on, pull it off, let it run—anything I can do to manipulate my medium, to draw out the sense of attachment I feel for the subjects of my painting. No mark is precious to me when it goes down because I know it will recede behind the other layers of paint. I build the painting intuitively, leaving it open to an evolving response to what the piece is becoming, until finally I feel I cannot add anything to it and call it finished. Jennie Taylor also resides in Ogden Valley. Her daughter tells us that “as an artist, decorator, and gardener, her mother has a flair for color.” Jennie took up oil painting late in life, but instantly had a feel for painting flowers. She has been painting for 27 years. “She gets her inspiration for her soft floral and dreamy landscapes from her beautiful surroundings.” Robert Call has been painting full-time since his retirement from teaching at Bonneville High. At his studio, Studio Nine, he paints with a number of other well-known Ogden artists such as Steve Songer and Jerry Hancock. Mr. Call works in both watercolor and oils. He states “The thing he likes most about painting is the emotional highs he gets from creating, he hopes that others will experience an emotional response from his work, good or bad.” The public is invited to visit the Eccles Community Art Center, and Carriage House Gallery, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden. Information: 801-392-6935. Regular Gallery Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.; and Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The Center is closed on Major Holidays. Valley Easter Egg Hunt Keeps Getting Bigger and Better By Jeannie Wendell Ogden Valley News Staff The springtime weather cooperated, allowing about 800 Valley residents, young and old, to join in the fun at the annual Easter Egg Hunt held at the Eden Park. The Eden fire station blew their siren to start the Easter Egg Hunt promptly at 11:00 a.m., and the kids were off. There were five different age groups of children competing for the goods, each picking the Eden Park clean of about 5,000 Easter eggs. Linda Gillespie said, “The kids are just like vacuum cleaners. I could barely get back to the Bowery before the kids were right behind me.” It only took about one minute to clear all the eggs from the park. Everyone had fun and was very appreciative of the event. Many are already looking forward to next year’s spring time tradition. A big thanks to Flint, Dewayne and Stephanie Guthrie; and Asa, Alex , Mike and Linda Gillespie for stuffing about 5,000 eggs. By the time you’ve filled the last egg, “Your hands can become very sore,” Gillespie explained. “But it’s always a lot of fun.” Also a big round of applause goes to Eden Park Board members Lamar Bott, Linda Gillespie, and Bonnie Knobla. They did a great job. Peery’s Egyptian Theater to Offer Summer Workshops Peery’s Egyptian Theater today announced the inaugural session of the Summer Workshop Series. The Summer Workshop Series classes will be held in Peery’s Egyptian Theater’s 2400 square foot rehearsal hall. It will feature over a dozen different performing arts and fitness classes offered to people of all ages during the months of June and July. Taught by local professionals, workshops will be offered in Irish step dance, ballet, African dance, creative, jazz, hip hop, tap, belly dancing, swing dance, acting, group voice, drumming, kung fu, Pilates, tai chi, yoga, and more. Many classes are offered during the day, most with sessions in June or July providing bored kids and harried parents plenty opportunity for taking part in enriching activities this summer. “We wanted to open this facility more to the public, to make Peery’s Egyptian a hub of activity for the whole community by offering a wide range of performing arts and fitness classes in our stunning rehearsal studio,” says Peery’s Egyptian Theater Director Narlene Mathie. “With its long mirrored wall and ballet barre, this room is perfect for the classes we’re offering this summer. It’s spacious, light and airy,” says Mathie of the rehearsal studio. “It also has one of the best sprung oak dance floors in town. It’s just a great place to take a class.” Workshop teachers will be at the Taste of Ogden on Saturday, May 31 from 11:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Municipal Park offering participatory demonstrations for kids in the Children’s Activity Corner. Adult workshop teachers will offer demonstrations that afternoon from 4 to 6 in the courtyard and rehearsal studio at Peery’s Egyptian Theater, 2415 Washington Blvd. (immediately south of the theater). Classes will be filled on a first-come firstserved basis. Brochures with complete schedules and registration forms are available at the Ogden Eccles Conference Center Operations Office (first floor, 2415 Washington Blvd.) during normal business hours, by email peerysegypt@weber.edu or by calling 3953227.
