People Moving to Rural Areas Want Amenities of City Life The excellent Ogden Valley News coverage of the proposed Eden incorporation deserves a Valley-wide “thank-you.” The Editor’s View on “Clichés Not to Live By” targeted those of us who are not thinking carefully. I confess that the “growth is inevitable” cliché/assumption inhibited me from getting involved. However, my long life experience has also taught me that government decisions are often influenced by the reality of “Money talks” – a cliché left off that list. Perhaps I am one of the “newcomers,” having lived in the Valley for only 25 years. I grew up in Cleveland, and came to Utah after ten years in Washington D. C. As a big city person, the Valley took my breath away, and my friends back east did not believe that there were no streetlights where I lived. Moonlight, starlight and no traffic lights assured me that I had, indeed, discovered an Eden Paradise. My love for the rural beauty of the Valley places me as a supporter of the Master Plan, and opponent of a sewer system that can only ensure high density development. That said, I understand the objections of people who support development “for comfort and convenience” as described in Dreinie Hattingh’s insightful article. The closed dam road certainly interfered with convenience. As for comfort, back pain awoke me to the fact that we need more facilities for seniors who can no longer hike or ride horseback. But we don’t need a McDonalds when we have two Eden pizza parlors, the Eden General Store, and the Huntsville restaurants. A movie theater? I prefer watching videos available for rent in Eden. A community center open to everyone would be a more welcome development for us “newcomers.” One last thought. Observe how fast the world has changed during our lifetimes. Are we ready to concede that “progress,” and “development” are uncontrollable? Or, will our sorrow for the loss of the irreplaceable antiquities in Iraq give us pause in deciding what treasures are worth saving in our little paradise? The article you wrote, “Clichés Not to Live By” was very interesting. It seems to me that so many people want to live in rural areas, and after they get there, they want all the amenities of city life. Which of course brings all the problems. We find that happening here in California all the time. Even though I live here in California and will, by all chances, die here, I still miss the small town ambiance that I knew growing up in Huntsville. I sometimes get teary eyed when I read about some of the changes you tell about in the paper. I really enjoy getting the paper, and hope that you and the others working on it will keep it going for years to come. Keep up the good work. Combed their heads and made the beds Sent them out to play Gathered up their many toys Put some books away. Dusted chairs and mopped the stairs, Ironed an hour or two, Baked some cookies and made some pie Then she made a stew. The telephone rang constantly The doorbell did the same.
