In the case of tjie Duchesne County Hospital's computer, you junk it and be thankful that the countyY old computer will be available by February. a.m. last Thursday, a hot water line At about located directly above the hospital's Burroughs base computer unit ruptured. Even though the break was discovered fairly quickly, the unit was completely ruined. "It is just totaled: its just a mess." said Burroughs Field Engineer Dex .Moesser. in addition to tlrc watf r, 'insulation fibers- ;and . dust . .came, down through, the suspended ceiling, adding to the disaster. Although he is certain that the home unit is beyond repair. Moesser said that the equipment is being sent to Salt Lake City for analysis. Parts of the unit, the terminal and the line printer, may be salvageable. According to hospital administrator Chad Evans, this kind of thing has happened before. The water lines are suspended just above false ceilings throughout the hospital. Normally this would not be a problem, but the pipes are connected with neoprene (rubber) sleeves. "They don't drip to let us know when they are going bad." said Evans. "They just break." In the past the only real damage has been to the false ceilings. Broken connections have caused some quick room changes for patients and some minor clean up. Evans said that the connections have been broken "seven or eight" times. The 5 million hospital expansion, scheduled to begin next year, will take care of the water pipe breaks and other problems with the physical plant of the hospital. It is not known how extensive the insurance coverage for the computer shower episode will be. Adjusters had not made an estimate as of press time. County Commission chairman Jim Reidhead is hopeful that most of the loss will be covered. Since the current Duchesne County computer is very similar to the hospitals ruined unit, the county may trade theirs to the hospital for the insurance money, said Reidhead. In the meantime the hospital is transferring all its computer records to the county computer in Duchesne. Since that computer is currently being phased out in favor of the new unit, there is plenty of room and time on the old computer. The billings are transferred from Roosevelt to Duchesne on a daily basis. "This is an inconvenience." said Evans of the makeshift program for keeping hospital money records current. He indicated that there shouldnT be any delays in mailing out monthly statements.
