According to Lee Sherry, Utah State University Extension agent is youth for Davis County,' education funded by federal, state and county funds. In 1914 the federal government Act passed the Smith-Levwhich established the Extension Service,' which in turn is the support service provided to youths. The goal of the program is to develop the countrys most priceless resource, the youth, Sherry said. The Extension Service (4-helps boys and girls prepare for successful living in a changing proworld, she said. The gram also provides the youths with leadership skills. The youths are taught or led in a project club by a volunteer adult or teen leaders, Sherry said. Leader training is given to leaders and help is also available from agents in the extension of4-- - 4--H, 4-- H er 4-- H 4-- H 4-- H 4-- H fice. Some of the club activities stressing development of leadership include leather crafting, ice cream making, and clown facepainting. Clinton resident Elaine Smith, instructor for clown said the skill she instructs can be used a lot of different face-painti- 4-- ways. Smith said she started to in- after receiving pointers from an Ogface-painti- den area clown. I started teaching it because it looked like a lot of fun, Smith said. Other expertise offered in includes instruction in leather craft work. Ive been doing leather craft work since 1949, said Layton instructor Morris Miller. Leather craft work can range from lacing wallets to making saddles, Morris said, adding but each student must purchase their own leather. Morris said the students re- -' ceive 20 hours of instruction, with their finished product going to the county fair to be exhibited. as the Morris referred to most worthwhile organization there is for children, including the Boy and Girl Scouts. Morris is a retired school teacher of 35 years and became acquainted with through his ' wife Afton, who instructs cooking and sewing programs. They and their seven children make homemade ice cream each month as a family activity. However, a number of instructors agree the best thing about is the price. We had horses, and we needed to do something with them so they wouldnt just sit around, Heather said, explaining her reason for joining the club. Everyday we ride out of the pasture and on the side of the street, she said.
