Show IPP Special Section Millard County Chronicle Progress Page Intensive IPSC training pays off On March 3 1983 the first group of IPSC recruits was hired to begin training to operate and maintain the mammoth Intermountain Power Project (IPP) Four years later nearly two hundred and fifty skilled operators technicians and maintenance craft workers had completed formal training programs ranging in duration from 3 months to two years These people have now assumed as Unit Control positions Operators Mechanics and Electricians Journeyman Heavy Equipment Operators Lab Analysts and Instrument and Control Technicians Intermountain Power Service Corporation that has been (IPSC) is the organization established to permanently operate and maintain the IPP Facilities which consist of the Railcar Service Center in Springville Utah the DC Converter Station and the Intermountain Generating Facility located in West Millard County IPSC’s According to S Gale Chapman Plant Manager the goal of IPSC was to “have fully trained personnel ready to assume total operation and maintenance responsibilities previous to the time the Plant was completed” That goal was met well ahead of schedule Most of the training has been done by IPSC Training Technicians and Supervisors with the balance coming from outside vendor representatives Although IPSC has hired a number of employees from other utilities the major emphasis of the Company has been to select and train Utah people Mr Chapman further stated that “Because of the quality of training given at IPSC other utilities have sometimes recruited quite heavily in our area” Indicative of the investment and commitPower ment to training the Intermountain Agency (IPA) owners of the Project have Unit” All Unit Control Operators receive training on the simulator before actually running the Plant’s Control Board A a part of every IPSC Trainee’s Curriculum they are quired to complete a “Basic Academics” and “Principles of Steam Electric Generation (PSEG) Course” both of which are now available in Home Study Format Although the initial work force has been trained and is currently functioning employees who are seeking to advance their careers are encouraged to complete these courses to be prepared for future openings “Basic Academics” includes fundamental study skills an introduction to steam power mathematics graphs and charts plants basic physics material basic chemistry The PSEG science and basic electricity Course contains plant specific principles on steam generated power plants When IPSC first started hiring groups of trainees they were specifically selected and trained to work in Operations Maintenance and Lab Testing Areas and after completing the required courses were given additional job specific training Currently employees who complete the Basic Academics and PSEG Courses may t i I I ?
