Show Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club respond to community growth The influx of 4700 construction workers their spouses and children could have been a disastrous situation if the cities and county officials had not been prepared Land use planning new schools adequate water and sewer systems social services police and fire protection were all in place and an important factor to the planned growth of Millard County The key aspect of keeping new people in the community is the acceptance they receive from the long time residents How do you mix the newcomers of the community with the long term residents? The Delta Area Chamber of Commerce accepted this challenge and developed a plan that would mingle the old with the new The Welcome Council was created to plan social events luncheons dances and other functions that encouraged all residents of Millard County to participate Several of the luncheons were held at the Intermountain Power Project Community Center located in the Construction Workers Housing Comto determine the plex Tickets were number of guests and over two hundred ladies filled the cafeteria to hear the program enjoy the delicious food and listen to the experiences of those around them A new committee was periodically to assure every group of dividuals could have a change of showing others a good time and the sharing of new ideas The goal of the luncheons and parties was to allow the new residents a chance to be troduced to the local community and to share their thoughts on life caring of children politics and items that have common grounds The Chamber of Commerce also provided packets of information regarding the facilities and opportunities in the area Doctors professional services churches and many other items were described in the handouts Recreational activities and points of interest were also covered in the booklet Rodney J Clark Site Project Manager was deeply involved in the Chamber and the Clark was programs that were developed elected to serve on the Board of Directors and oversee certain areas of responsibility Clark was a firm believer in the program established by the Chamber and was strumental in persuading the Project to contract with the Chamber to assist with the new residents to the welcoming community In August of 1983 the first of three contracts was signed between the Chamber and the Project The total of the contracts was approximately $6000000 The Chamber its Board of Directors and members should be very proud of their acIn the wake of an insurcomplishments mountable task the Chamber met the challenge with vigor and enthusiasm and completed the job with great success We appreciate the opportunity of being one of the project “Little Guy” subcontractors and suppliers It has been an exciting experience in keeping the trucks and vehicles rolling and all of the little things “bolted together” Thanks! Congratulations to all for doing a “Whale” of a job on a “Whale” of a project IPP Special Section Millard County Chronicle Progress Page New dam built at DMAD In June 1983 IPP engineers and contractors spent a hectic month trying to save the earthen dam at the DMAD reservoir on the Sevier River They were involved in building a new diversion upstream to slow the water and in several futile attempts to save the dam itself Then when the spillway on the dam collapsed and the reservoir began to empty the contractors at the Gunnison Bend Reservoir on the other side of Delta breached that dam to minimize the damage of a large break After the cleanup work started on the new Reservoir dam at the DMAD reservoir and concurrently IPP contractors started work on the pumping station there The reservoir will provide most of the cooling water used at the Project A coffer dam to hold back the water during construction was built and the pumping station was erected during the next year The pipeline that carries water to the reservoir Project site terminates in an that contains over four thousand acre feet of water until it is used the dam winter the was By following rebuilt with a new modern spillway IRONWORKERS early phase of plant construction Congratulations IPP!!
