Especially interesting new books “Word Origins & Their Romantic stories” by Wilford Funk for 16 years of Funk and Wagnalls president publishers is really an interesting book to browse through The book is nontechnical but factual and very easy reading You’d be surprised at the unique meanings our American English came from Mr Funk starts chapter one wiitr “Every word was once a poem Each began as a picture Our language is made up of terms that were all originally Figures of speech “Sometimes the pictures can be rediscovered and restored so that their beauty will once more be seen At other times the attrition of the ages has worn the images away and obliterated them so that no trace is left” And chapter four begins: “words are so much like human beings that it is sometimes hard to tell them apart Their lives follow the pattern of our own life histories” He goes on to plain that some words stay in the language and some die of oversight fairly soon The mention of the fact that the American English is different from any in the world because of the unique mixture of native people who are part of our melting pot is not a new idea but not often brought to mind You will enjoy picking up this book just for a few minutes in the library and browsing through it The newest book from Reader’s Digest is “Birds Their Life Their Ways Their World” This book is a work of art as well as a widely compassing treatise on birds of the world including extinct birds Too bad we didn’t have this book a couple of weeks ago when the sixth graders had to draw and write about three different birds True we had the Audubon Series and three or four other books besides the Encyclopedias but this one would ton reside in Provo where they operate a private boarding school for Youth in trouble from various
