He was and is one of the neatest people and I think more of him than I do of anyone else” Delta is truly home for Dick Ross for he has never been away from his home town for more than two weeks at a time Oh he has thought about living somewhere else like in St George where winters are milder and where he would be closer to race tracks but he never has regretted staying Matter of factly he stated “I love it here Excitement is what you make it” there have been Professionally changes in Dick’s life When he was twenty he left Jim Kelly and went to work for the railroad a job that lasted the by Dawn Carder 1987 Dick Ross opened On April Dick’s Tires and Little Garage at 291 East Main Street in Delta Utah The opening marked a reunion for Dick for it was on the same site that he began his working career twenty years ago As a kid around the age of nine Dick would stop by Jim Kelly’s shop on the way home from school and just “hang around” The pattern continued until by Dick’s admission Jim gave the youth a job So by the time he was twelve years of age Dick Ross was working for Jim recapping tires and doing whatever he was capable of anything” doing Jim Kelly who had gone to school to be an artist first had a shop where the Killpack Motel now stands Later he moved to 291 East Main “He was six weeks Next he worked for seven years at Brush Wellman as a chemical operator Actually he admits that he tried about every job there was at Brush and he enjoyed the monetary compenHowever sation and the benefits things didn’t work out just as he had hoped so he left Having a garage was something that Dick decided he wanted to try For two months he worked for someone else at Chevron then he opened his own shop That establishment was housed in the present Valley View Glass building Subsequently the Chevron owner went to work for Dick and later went to Brush Wellman What a turn around! For a year and a half Dick operated his first business before another change occurred He and Fred Anderson purchased the Phillips station which was is today and there located where he remained for six years Following the sale of the Phillips station Dick went to work on construction for IPP “Money there was good” he said but he moved on Steve Riding opened Spity’s and Dick went to work for him There he remained' until Steve closed the shop So Dick was looking for a job The former Lynn’s Tire building was available equipment was available and Dick had some of his own He made an offer which was accepted and he now is leasing with the intent of buying “I can’t stand paying rent” he admitted Dick’s Although a new business Tires and Little Garage appears to be thriving Sales totaled $14000 the first month and rose to $17000 the second Customers wander in and out asking Dick questions getting estimates or just chatting Of course Dick has always been in Delta and people know him yet the rapport indicates experienced respect and trust “I haven’t had any formal training but I’ve learned a lot on the job And Jim Kelly taught me everything” Perhaps Dick is a little modest His demeanor seems to make all in his presence respect his word and appreciate his fairness He believes that PR is most important and he will go out of his way to avoid a hassle with a customer He charges according to what a particular job entails always attempting to be equitable The name Dick’s Tires and Little for the Garage is quite appropriate business for it sums up the offerings Tires are sold and small repairs are made Inspection related repairs official inspections shock absorbers and oil changes are handled Dick says that he would rather do fast jobs because Three vehicle accident Veterans outreach program A representative of the Disabled American veterans FE Martinez Department Service Officer will visit their your area to assist veterans dependents and widows in pursuing claims and any other issues with the Veterans Administration This program is funded by the State of Utah and the Disabled American Veterans There is no fee for these ser vices and no requirement to become a member of our organization to receive any assistance Mr Martinez will be at the following locations on the dates and times specified: 18 11:00 am to 12 18 1:00 pm to 2 turn over produces more revenue Also space is limited He is renting half of Spity’s empty shop which he will use during the winter Dick’s wife Joanne does the daily books and his daughters do inspection Ronny Skeem and Bryan reports “Burley” Christiansen work for Dick and the latter applies his philosophy to “When I work for his employees someone I just want to know what’s expected of me I try to let Ronny and Burley know what’s expected If there is a problem I hope they’ll come to me and we can straighten things out” The shop is open Monday through Saturday from 8 am until 6 pm or until a job is completed Dick enjoys the freedom of doing what he is doing being his own boss but he his keenly aware of the responsibilities The buck always ends with the boss prohibiting him from taking off whenever he chooses to do so However Dick says that he has to get away occasionally and he does A racer of cars since he was fifteen he still enjoys and pursues this hobby In fact he along with his family started with a Corvette in the very shop he now is buying! As racers the Ross clan has a commendable record Last year Joanne at the won the Points Championship Dixie Raceway which entitles her to free entrance this year She also raced in the Bracket Nationals in Denver one Her brother is sitof 480 competitors ting first place Dick is second and Joanne is third with points this year Son Scott began racing when he was only 13 years of age and daughter Hollie $200 is considered payback He and his family just plain enjoy racing They have competed in California Las Vegas Salt Lake City Bakersfield and St George and they continue to strive for excellence They work for consistency consistency of driver and car for consistency is the main component for success He’s lived here all of his life in just four houses Now he and his family are enjoying “country life” in their Sutherland home and he continues to love the area and the people His return to the shop located at 291 East Main is somewhat analagous to a tire for both form circles Somehow the twenty
