Movie: Baby the Rain Must Fall (65) Rerridt Don Murray Drama Rip Tom prier Lenten) kik hero in 11404 Scitr Movie: ENO a s - Moues 'Teen Win Lose Movie: Shipwrecluld (PG 90) Mickey DS ifo- :a 'Faith Executioner's Song Eii1L2iR1111 PBS Presents Bud Greenspan's "Calgary '88: 16 Days of Glory" By Matt Meachern Tribune Media Services "We owe a similar debt to those great athletes who 'lose' by a fraction of a Second" says Olympic filmmaker Bud Green span "as we do to those athletes who are fortunate enough to stand on the victory podium" Greenspan has spent the last four decades capturing the drama and glory of the Olympic Games on film This week PBS presents "Calgary '88: 16 Days of Glory" official film of the 1988 Winter the Olympics The series which originally ran on the Disney Channel in 1989 airs on PBS in four parts beginning Sunday (Check local listings for exact dates and times) "We're very pleased that PBS is 'running the series" says Greenspan "It sort of fulfills what we've tried to do and that is to make films that live forever" As a director Greenspan always has been more concerned with the exhilaration excitement and anguish of athletic competition rather than the winners or losers His documentaries have provided a look at some of the intimate and private moments that competitors share as they compete for Olympic gold Greenspan remembers one such moment from the Calgary Games: "On the day of the final race of (Canadian speed-skateGaetan Boucher in the 1500 meters his parents — who had never missed a race of his — showed up and we decided to put a camera on them It turned out to be just as poignant and just as dramatic as the race itself The father goes absolutely berserk when his son is ahead for the first 1000 meters then realizes that he is not going to make it and finally when the anthem is played for the East German who wins he breaks down and cries If we created that story in advance it would never work We just let the cameras roll and that was it "I think we're good storytellers" says Greenspan explaining his success "We pay attention to the fact that the audience is a lot more intelligent than most of my colleagues think they are They have to overexaggerate emotion and I don't think we do that We create the situation so that every Is or her own feelings Each one dreams his or her own dream "I think wht-- we do is to humanize sports to the point where audiences get a bpecial relationship in which they believe and understand that these young people are no different than them except they meet challenges perhaps better than the ordinary person does and overcome them" Greenspan has become disillusioned by the amount of publicity given to the negative side of athletics Newspaper headlines often make the sports sections resemble a police blotter "I think that's where were losing the scope of things" says Greenspan sadly "I don't mind having heroes but think the media is spending 100 percent of their time on finding feet of clay instead of spending a good pan of their time on using role models properly None of us can stand up to what the press or 'Geraldo' or 'Hard Copy' can find out When we have to idolize the (Mike) the Ben Johnsons and the (John) McEnroes I think it's a disservice to what I think sport is in individual has tended to be "I'm getting a little weary of he adds "We've got a lot of young people moving into the (sports media) business who are taking the high road by taking the Icor road They believe that the quickest way to success is a scoop And the scoop usually is a negative one" Which is why Greenspan is proud that his films view the athletes as individuals rather than winners or losers "The only criticism we ever get — and consider it a badge of honor — is when people write 'Isn't it nice that Greenspan still sees sports through the eyes of a young boy' And the day I don't is the day I'm finished" Perhaps an incident several years ago best represents the depth of Greenspan's convictions During the 1968 Summer Games Greenspan filmed a segment entitled "The Last African Runner" which chronicled the tuggles of a Tanzanian runner wlo finished last in the Olympic Ms athon On the first day of the 1976 Summer Games In Mnntreal Greenspan received a call from an NBC producer who wanted to use the piece on the network's news that evening Greenspan agreed on the condition that it ran in its entirety After being informed by Greenspan that the segment ran for minutes the producer balked Greenspan picks up the story: "So told him he couldn't use It He said 'We have great editors over here' I said 'I don't care what you've got This plays as is or you don't do it' He says 'Won't you change your mind? Let met put It together and show you I won't lose anything' I said 'You could work for a year and I don't care It's going minutes' He said Well I'm sorry you feel this way' and we hung up "A few minutes later John Chancellor calls up and says 'Bud will you forgive me?
