seems to be preprinted advertising sections that most large companies use to carry their message For example Kmart moved its preprint from the Daily Herald to the Utah County Journal about five years ago recently after an intense effort the Daily Herald won Kmart back Kmart preprints also appear in the Salt newspapers that circulate in Utah County The newspaper war intensified last year when the Utah County Journal owned by the Oldham family increased its publication schedule from two to three days a week and beefed up its news operation by hiring several seasoned journalists The increased publication schedule was viewed as the first step toward daily publication With the loss of a big advertiser such as Kmart the Journal has had to cut back The newspaper recently dropped The Associated Press wire service to save money although Managing Editor Michael Morris hopes it can be resumed The Journal has retained the Washington Post Los Angeles Times wire service but misses AP's Utah coverage Meanwhile the Provo Daily Herald has responded to the competition Managing Editor Earl Biederman has led an effort to modernize the venerable Herald by adopting a contemporary format with increased color The Daily Herald is part of an chain Scripps League Newspapers Mr Biederman says his corporate bosses have allowed him to increase the paper's news space during a recessionary time when many newspapers are cutting back The two largest newspapers in the state — The Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News — also view Utah County as fertile ground for potential subscribers but each brings a different strategy into the fray The Deseret News has made a substantial commitment to covering Utah County It established a bureau in Provo with a staff of five employees and two The News publishes an edition tailored to Utah County readers Bureau Chief Brooke Adams says the staff tries to cover the news at the same treattime providing ment of key issues At The Tribune Editor James E Shelledy believes in a newspaper with no page s just to cater to a particular area He sees The Tribune as a statewide newspaper Under this philosophy if a Utah County story is good enough to make the newspaper all readers should see it Conversely if a story from Salt Lake City or Moab is important enough to be included Utah County readers would also be interested in it Utah County readers benefit from the intense newspaper competition All four newspapers are trying to better meet what they perceive as the area's needs But there are just so many advertising dollars and it may be a matter of time before some of the competitors find they have to scale down their efforts Lake-base- d 581-790- 5 THURSDAY MINORITY A Minority and Women-Owne- d Business Conference will be held from 9 am to
