Death, dying in family context perience loss through the death of a child, sibling or parent Widowhood or the death of an aged parent seems to young people like an event far into the future. Our data indicate that death is largely unknown and not experienced by most people younger than 20 in our society. If death has come in a family context, it is usually loss of a grandparent Only about 1 of 20 persons indicated that he had actually observed the death of someone. Most people have attended at least one funeral and several viewings at the death of someone by the time they are 20 About 2 of 10 have participated in a funeral program through being pallbearer or having a part on the funeral program Outside the family, death of a friend has been experienced by the majority of young people in their first 20 years of life The most common type of death experience is that of a personal or family pet. Nearly 100 percent of people in the first 20 years of life have had to cope with the death of a pet For many, it is perceived as a significant loss. Death of a dog. cat or horse seems to have the greatest impact As pets become more and more humanized. it is loical to conclude that By Jay D. Schvaneveldt, Ph D. Professor, Family and Human Development Department, Utah State University LOGAN Death of a family member or close friend is usually considered to be the most stressful of all life events. Most bereaved Dr. Schvaneveldt people have specific symptoms of the loss, usually manifested as several months of depression. Research indicates that 10 to 20 percent of the widowed in America exhibit sufficient stress a year or more after their loss to indicate some form of real clinical depression. This means that of the approximately 800,000 people who are widowed each year, 80,000 to 160,000 people suffer very serious depression This does not take into account the rates of depression of people who ex C personal stress at the death of a pet will increase. Death is largely removed from young people growing up in the United States today. This is mostly good, because it means that they needn't experience the death of parents, siblings or other significant people in their lives For most, death is only a reality for old people and the other " guy This was not always the case. About 85 percent of all deaths occur in some type of institutional setting, somewhere other than the home, mostly shielded from the living People die, but we go to great lengths to talk about the bereaved, the deceased, embalmment, interment and memorial gardens.
