Show 2B. The Salt Lake Tribune. Sundav, February o 16, 1986 BarlbeH! By Tom ..." ON THE ROAD AGAIN That makes for a great Willie Nelson song but it can be very hectic and tiring to say the least . . . This past week I had occasion to do a little business traveling, which is something I hitam not really accustomed to ting Boston, Dallas and back home in two nights and three days . . The flight from Salt Lake City to Boston was quite pleasant, in fact, and I think that Western does a great job of getting you where you want to go along with helping the hours pass quickly , . They do this by serving lunch on our flight we had a choice of chicken or lasagna . . Being a connoisseur of all things Italian I selected the lasagna which I will rename Mystery Goo, having the consistency of e silly putty . . .I'm not sure but when the flight attendants were going through their safety checklist about where the emergency exits are and what to do with the little oxygen masks when they pop out in case of pressure loss, I think that one of them said. "In case of emergency over water the lasagna can be used for floI have also wondered if tation there are really any little oxygen masks in there, or do they just say that1 When we reached Boston I found out why ordering the lasagna was such a wise choice It made the food at the Airport Hilton in Boston I should seem almost palatable have known when I walked past the salad bar as our hostess escorted us I have seen more to our table attractive, fresher offerings in a dumpster out back of the produce department at Safeway. Saturday gusts reached 47 mph PROVO (AP) - Some 30,000 resi- dents have been advised to boil culinary water and avoid using hot water because heavy rainfall has introduced silt into springs that feed part of the city's water system, officials say. The Utah County Health Depart- ment issued the warning Saturday after residents reported murky water coming from their faucets, said spokeswoman Raylene Ireland. She said the order affected roughly half the residents in this city of about 65,000, or those living in areas north of Center Street. The order was expected to remain in effect until aarly Sunday. The Utah County Health Department has directed all residents with murky water to boil for 10 minutes before using for culinary purposes, she said. Ireland said the department received the first report at about 8 50 a m. "It was just in isolated areas, but then we found out there was a problem, she said. City water crews were dispatched to flush pipelines with full-sca- high-pressu- hydrant water and to clean out major conduits, she said. In addition, residents were advised to avoid using hot water because of the possibility of damage to water heaters, Ireland said. Earlier this month, a Utah Power & Light Co. pipeline in nearby Provo Canyon was crushed by a landslide, prompting a similar order, she said. Evaluation of the testing is not expected to be done for some time. A reason for the local selection is that about 35 postal employees with hearing problems, of more than 2,500 nationally, work in the Salt Lake City area, Richard Thorp, supervisor of aiidio-visuproductions at the agency's William F. Bolger Management Academy in Potomac, Md., said, add1760 W. 2100 South, closed-captione- ing' ("If we use closed captions, we'11 be spending $40,000 to $60,000 a year to include them on our videos. And there will be a $60,000 one-tim- e ture for equipment that expendiwill be sent to postal facilities across the country. So we need to run a field test and get the reaction of employees before we actually spend the money." Since so much employee training is done via video tape, some sort of interpreting is needed for the hearing impaired. The academys staff produced 80 films last year. The tests are believed to validate his feeling that the employees who don't hear prefer video tapes to having an interpreter sign the message with hand signals. Close captioned means the words being spoken appear at the bottom of the screen. Its called closed because it can only be seen on the screen if the television set or video monitor owner has specific decoder equipment. Hearing-impairepostal employees now view training films with the closed-captione- d d help of a fellow employee fluent in sign language who interprets what is being said with hand motions. If an employee is not available, someone from outside the Postal Service is hired to do the interpreting. Hiring interpreters is more expensive than closed captioning. Other disadvantages of signing are that in- terpreters are not always available, and signers normally have to paraphrase what is being said. After viewing tapes translated by signing and closed caption, employees were asked to fill out a questionnaire comparing the two. Kirk Walker, test interpreter as well as one for the Utah Association for the Deaf, said hearing-impaired workers said using closed captions was important to equal opportunity and to achieve upward mobility.
