Show Damaged pagers, IQS The Salt Lake Tribune July Wednesday, 11, 1984 Horse and Rider Julie and Tony Appear to be Veterans By Pattie Auer Tribune Staff Writer MURRAY In the two years Julie Kedigh, 14, has competed in horse shows she has gained national prominence. Although she has been performing for only a short time, her horse, Ibn El Talg, affectionately known as Tony, is a veteran. In fact he practically trained her. Tony, who was given to Julie by a friend of the family, is 24 years old and has been in show business for a long time. We call him Tony the pony because he doesn't know his age, said Mrs. Kedigh, Julies mother. The Kedighs leased Tony from Linda Gallegos when Julie first became interested in showing. As she began to win, they wanted to buy her a younger horse. Mrs. Gallegos gave them Tony and Julie has been winning with him ever since. Julie became interested in horse shows from her older sister Suzanne. Suzanne talked me into showing. I decided to go out and see if I was good enough and to have fun, Julie said. My first show was at the State Fair when I was 12. It was a halter class and I used my sisters horse and took second. Never Had Lessons Even though the has never had any lessons she has done remarkably well. Julie has qualified for the U.S Arabian-Hal- f Arabian Championship Horse Show that will be held in Kentucky in October. Qualifying wasn't an easy task. In order to compete in the Nationals a rider must win a medal class in one of the eight qualifying shows in the state or score a certain amount of points throughout the year. Countless Championships At the Spanish Fork Horse Show, Julie won the medal class in English Saddle Seat Equitation, age division 17 and under. The rider is judged on skill and is required to do various patterns for a judge. She has also qualified for Nationals in Half Arabian English Pleasure, an open class where the horse is judged on his performance. She needs only two more points to qualify for the Western Pleasure division. Tony, a full Arabian, has won countless championships throughout L e years, already winning three this Tony won the Golden Spike English Pleasure Half Arabian Show, corf!PetlUon where only the horse judged0" h abillty t0 y. The meet, held at the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center on the east bench of Sandy, lured 24 swim teams from Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Texas, California and Colorado for competition in senior, junior and age group divisions. "Its the fastest swimming competition outside of the college in the state, said meet director Jim noting that several meet competitors were in fact, participants at the recent Olympic trials. With its roster of 40 swimmers, the host Cottonwood Heights squad went into the meet as the favorite and won going away on the strength of its se Ta-ket- a, Tribune Staff Photo by Paul Frouohton Jwie Kedigb has never taken any horseback riding lessons, but has gained national prominence for her skills nonetheless. nior boys and girls divisions, the o girls division and the overall depth of the squad. Lead The Heights opened up a more than lead over the Boulder, Colo., Poseidons and North Jeffco of Arvada, Colo., on the first day of competition and were never seriously challenged the rest of the meet. Boulders close and they and North Jeffco have a lot of good swimmers, Taketa said. But we had the overall numbers and the fact that we were home gave us the edge. Conspicuous in their absence this year was Californias Mission Viejo team, which annually fields one of the largest (86 MV tankers were on hand for last years invitational) and best swim clubs in the nation and has been the prime draw at past Cottonwood Heights Invitationals. They had some scheduling conflicts and some internal which kept them home, Taketa lamented, adding that had Mission Viejo made it, they almost cer- 13-t- 100-Poi- nt 100-poi- nt Colecovision Introduces Rocn Rope Software By Michael Blanchet Summer is the time of year when cotnputer manufacturers begin to introduce their offerings for the Christmas season. In keeping, Coleco will offer some major new merchandise. Intent on breathing new life into its disappointing Adam Computer, Coleco will devote most of its Christmas season releases to that machine. They have, however, promised to continue supporting the Colecovision console with new software. Rocn Rope is the most recent Colecovision release, and is somewhat similar to Donkey Kong. Originally an arcade game, Rocn Rope casts the player as an explorer hot on the trail of the birds of fortune, taking players to a land that time forgot. The obstacle to reaching the elusive bird is an army of dinosaurs and cavemen, both of which look a lot like gremlins. Game play covers three screens, to get to each with same objective the top in the shortest period of time. At first, finding the way is fun and challenging. But with only one safe route through each screen, winning is just a matter of finding the path. Rocn Rope makes good use of a novel play mechanism, specifically, shooting a rope and then climbing it. Just flinging the rope to see what it will latch onto next is exciting for first-tim- e players. tainly wouldve been favored to win the invitational. Still, even had Mission Viejo shown up, Taketa felt his squad would have made a fight of it. We feel that with our senior boys, senior girls and 4 girls, we could have given them a run for their money, he said. 13-1- Served as Foundation Those senior boys served as the foundation for the home team over the weekend, and anchoring them Mike and were the Hayes brothers Pat and Scott Mefford, all of whom have competed for the University of Utah, swam at last winters NCAA Championships and tried to qualify for the Olympic team last month at Indianapolis. The Hayes brothers are freestyle specialists, with Mike competing in the 100 and 200 meter free and Pat in the 200. Mefford, meanwhile, is at his best in the 100 and 200 backstroke, although he too competed in the 100 free over the weekend making him the third fastest free stylist on the squad. The senior girls were led by Cindy Nelson, a Pocatello native and junior national qualifier and Mary DeNiro. Both swimmers, along with Lee Ann Lawlor and Sunny Lambson, are members of the record setting medley relay team that qualified for the upcoming senior nationals at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., next month. Nelson, a Junior National qualifier, led the Heights in the 100 and 200 butterfly, while DeNiro set the pace in the 100 and 200 breastroke. Lambson headed up the Cotton4 wood age group squad, specializing in the the 100 and 200 13-1- Entries Being Taken for Murray Youth Soccer League Boys and girls from kindergarten to ninth grade are eligilble for league play, and cost is $12 per child per season, or two seasons for $18.
