Show 6EV The Salt Lake Tribune Wednesday, July 11, 1984 Take Time to Be a Courteous Driver Here onottier article on automobile eafety written by Utah Highway Patrol Sat. Ken Bryant. r In the past two weeks, I have re-- ceived six telephone complaints and 'two written complaints about the driving habits and attitudes of the . drivers in the metropolitan Salt Lake area. The letters and calls have all expressed a concern about the way Utah drivers seem to become so aggressive when they get behind the wheel of an automobile. They seem to display a lack of concern for the other motorist on the highway. I, too, have noticed a difference between driving in "the city vs. driving in the outlying areas of Utah. But since I have been in outlying Utah for nine years, I assumed that it was just me who had lost those good driving habits. I have been watching as I drive my personal vehicles around and I get the impression that maybe the callers and writers are correct. We are in such a hurry to get somewhere that we become the only car on the road. We do not signal for our lane changes nor do we leave room for the merging traffic on the on ramp. We roll through red lights if it looks like we can make it without getting hit. We push the excellerator to the floor as we approach a traffic signal that has just turned yellow. After all, yellow just means that we have less time to get through the light. We ignore the speed limits in our residential areas, school zones and construction areas. The question I ask myself is, Why? The answer is possibly attitude. We are all afraid that someone is going to gnt away with something When I worked the road m the southern end of Utah, one of the most commonly used excuses for a drivers violation of a traffic law was "Everyone else is, why did you pick on me? That statement says a great deal about our attitude. s Adults blame it on the who are always in a hurry. The teenagers blame it on the older drivers who are always so slow and deliberate in what they do. The males blame it on the woman driver. The women blame it on the men. No one wants to accept the blame. Many of us are at fault. Many of us have developed a bad attitude toward driving, obeying the law, and the driver in the other vehicle. Do you have a bad attitude? teen-ager- i B ii ii i ii 1 1B Anne Minki M PIZZA J)i i$ir y )A Si no-ec0r- & ,d .
