Show TV are I The Salt Lake Tribune BYU Gay Character Pivotal in Brothers By Bob Wiseharl Newhouse News Service "Brothers is a fairly amusing new situation comedy on Showtime in which the pivotal character is gay. While the notion probably doesn't strike terror into the hearts of cable subscribers everywhere, it does seem to frighten everyone involved with the show, all of whom steadfastly maintain that the characters F. As Lou walks with a lisp. boyant with a capital sneers, Donald d When Lou learns that the Lou is a father, he asks, If you're really gay, how can you have children? "Were really very intelligent, archly replies Donald. We can learn once-marrie- a skill. Brothers isnt belly-laugfunny. Its amusing in the quiet way like, say, Cheers is amusing, though not in the same league. This is no coincidence. Fridays show was written by David Lloyd, Ed Weinberger and Stan Daniels, whose credits include The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi and Cheers. The project has been knocking around for years. When it was pitched to NBC in 1981, the network applied the attitude of benign neglect common to TV networks faced with a series they dont want. At the time, NBC was suffering from a bad case of the Sydney Shorrs. Tony Randall starred as a gay character in the series Sydney Shorr and except for a mention of his sexual preference in the first episode, Sydney was henceforth neutered. For the duration of the series, Randall steadfastly maintained that he was while NBC said he wasnt, but added that even if he was (hypothetically, you understand) it didnt matter because it was a show not about a gay character, but a show about a character. And so it went, right up to cancellation whereupon everyone ceased to care, if ever they did. To its credit, Showtime is more forthright than NBC was. Of Cliffs gayness, Showtime programmer Pe- h gay- ness is not the point. But judging by the first episode to be shown Friday at 8 p.m. EDT, the characters sexual preference is the entire thrust of the show. The bottom line on Brothers" is that its funnier than most comedy pilots and shows potential. The first episode will be repeated July 15, 18, 21 and 24. Starting Aug. 16, Showtime will have a new episode each week for six weeks, which could lead to a regular series along the lines of The Paper Chase, also on Showtime. The Brothers are named Waters. Lou (Brandon Maggart), the oldest, is big, bearded, blustery and not too bright. Joe (Robert Walden) is a retired pro football player who owns a restaurant. Kid brother Cliff (Paul Regina) is the one with the big secret. It doesnt long stay a secret. Literally at the altar, Cliff backs out of his Joe that wedding and tells best-ma- n hes gay. After some early gasping and fumbling, Joe handles the news pretty well. The big problem is how to tell Lou, who is less sensitive than he is smart. "Brothers is not above hauling out a stereotype. His name is Donald (Philip Charles MacKenzie), whos gay, a good friend of Cliff and flam Todays Viewing KTYX, Channel 4, 972-- 1 776 Channel 5, 575-535- 5 KBYL, Channel 11, (Provo) 378-529- 1 (D 6:15 a.m. CD Aerobics 1:30 p.m. Yan Can Cook Geographic Gunsmoke CD News 7:30 a.m. Sesame Street Todays Special CD Carol Burnett Spotlight Five Do it Yourself Great Chefs of New Orleans Gilligans Island ffi ffi CD Flintstones 8 a.m. CD CD Sesame Street Superfriends 8:25 a.m. Press Your Luck Figuring it Price is Right Street.
